Summer Of Soul

OIP.i3zp6P_3nRaHENeFTmQ22wHaD4?pid=ImgDet&rs=1

I just saw this movie on Hulu and it was really enjoyable. It was about a huge music festival in Harlem in 1969 during the period in which there was so much social unrest yet the festival was a bonding event for the community. I especially liked how they would have some of the participants watch their performances for the first time in 52 years and comment about their experiences. Musically, it was really diverse from the 5th Dimention to Nina Simone. Highlights for me were Sly and the Family Stone, Mavis Staples, and watching Stevie Wonder jam on drums! Any one else see this?

yes, it was amazing to hear how much Mavis was a fan-girl of Mahalia and how their joining together on stage at that concert was such a highlight of her life.

After multiple viewings, Quest really deserved the Oscar for this - amazing work.

The performances just keep blowing my mind and took me down rabbit holes on some of the artists I wasn't familiar with. Just such a great time capsule of music and culture.

It also gave me more love for Whitey On the Moon by Gil Scott-Heron lol

Bought this hoping for any of the other footage but no dice. Hopefully in the future.

As already stated, Summer of Soul rightfully won the Academy Award this year for best documentary feature. It's unfortunate the award was presented immediately after the Will Smith/Chris Rock confrontation and therefore very much overlooked.

The 5th Dimension was the performance that resonated with me the most. I knew of them already of course, but seeing them live and the corresponding interview made me seek out some of their albums.

Edit: The org discussed the film when it was released last year if you're interested in reading people's reactions here back then: https://prince.org/msg/8/467109

As much as I like supporting physical media, after watching this in 4K on Hulu, I can't downgrade to watching a standard definition DVD. It deserves a much higher quality release, on Blu-ray at least. I read that's how Disney operates now though, making its priority directing viewers to its streaming channels to watch its content while disc releases are generally an afterthought.

I'm one of those old school folks who must have a physical copy of something smile it's not enough for me to just stream something. The DVD quality is perfect,in my opinion.

Won an Oscar and can't get a BluRay release! CD I bought the soundtrack on CD and it has since appeared on vinyl.

Ya knew it was a Questlove film when the live drum breaks had their moments. cool
