Rose Royce's version is firmly planted in the 70s or whenever it came out. Just the production, but it's a good take.

I like Madonna's. I love the strings in the remix you posted. There's something raw about her original Like A Virgin version though. A bit 80s, a bit old school soul, a new hungry singer.

Honestly, M's version is the first I had ever heard of the song. (Which reminds me of another song - maybe I'll post my own who did it better post.)

Rose Royce.By the time this song came out in 1978,they had mastered the art of doing effective sad ballads..."I'm Going Down" and "Wishing On A Star" are two examples.
