Rob Squad react to "Rock Lobster" by The B-52's

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

This is got to be the funniest reaction video I've ever seen. Even more than folks reacting to the banned from MTV video for Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood lol

Yeah I watch them on youtube too. Yeah when it comes to the B-52's I like their later stuff starting from the Album Cosmic Thing (Their commercial hit era). Yeah Rock Lobster is just too weird for me (and I'm sure their are people who just love it, not me). I agree with Rob I do like the all the instruments on the track. Yeah I watch a few of the younger 20's something year old reacting to music from the 50's until the 90's. I like how they say "wow music was so much better back then". The are a few older people in their 40's doing reaction to music videos. I don't buy it that they never heard so much music before so I don't watch them.

I don't think it's that hard to ignore mainstream Top 40 pop music. From my experience, the majority of people I've been around only listen to one music genre, usually R&B or hip hop. If they're older Mexicans, then it's mainly Tejano or ranchera like Vicente Fernández.

Well could you identify currently popular acts like XXXTentacion, H.E.R., BTS, Migos, Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Jason Aldean, etc if you heard their songs? Do you know what any of them look like? razz It would seem to me that people in general are more likely to know a modern hit song over a old one from decades ago if they're listening to Top 40 radio and not classic rock/oldies. Current hits are the generally the ones that have the biggest #s on Youtube. Other than certain oldies like Take On Me, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, & Bohemian Rapsody which have been used in a lot of TV shows, movies, commercials, & video games,

Ummm your missing the point. I just don't buy people 40 years old or older that never heard of the Bee Gee's/ Earth Wind and Fire/Queen/ Madonna and so. They are jumping on the band wagon of doing reaction videos for making money from views/likes/subscribe/patreon accounts

My mom doesn't know Queen, Van Halen, or Pink Floyd or any rock music in general and she's older than 40. Many of my relatives did not listen to many artists if they were not black or were not played on R&B radio. I'd never heard of Bob Dylan until We Are The World came out. You're assuming that if a an act is popular, especially with a mainstream white audience, then everyone must know them. Well Garth Brooks is the biggest selling act of the 1990s. On the country chart George Strait has more Top 10 hits than anyone else on any other chart. That does not mean that Garth is huge in Nigeria. Also, hearing of an act does not mean a person has heard their music. There are a lot of music acts and actors where I've heard the name, but have never heard their music or seen their movies or TV shows. Like I've never in my life watched a single episode of Friends, Seinfeld, or Big Bang Theory, but I understand they are popular TV programs. Because I've read entertainment magazines.

Well talking about people roughly 40's through 60's. But mostly I'm talking about those individuals on youtube doing reaction videos (and not your mom lol ) Sorry but nothing you will say will change my mind that they are doing it for the money.

It depends on what kind of household that a person is raised in as what they're exposed to. If a person's parents and/or the friends they hang around with doesn't listen to Queen, why would they hear them? Maybe if they're into sports, they might hear We Are The Champions because that was often played during games and also wrestling. I only know The Monkees because MTV reran their show. I hadn't heard of them before that. That isn't what my relatives listened to. People in general listen to the same type of music their parents or grandparents listened to, if not the same generation of artists. Like they might not listen to MC Lyte, but they might listen to Cardi B instead.

As far as the reaction videos go, they are not usually geting paid from the videos. Because in the majority of cases there is a copyright claim from a record label and/or artist because of the music. So the videos can't be monetized, unless they are reacting to obscure or out-of print music.

They are making money from the patreon accounts. Also once you reach a certain amount of views you start making money from google ads. These reactors get around the copyright claims by making the video small, blurry, and pausing during the video, or even chopping up the video. I do have a feeling that eventually youtube will block all these reaction videos to popular artist. But for now they can get away with it.

Reaction videos aren't just music. There's also ones for movie trailers, TV shows, video games, viral videos, and even entire movies. Especially with Marvel/DC stuff. If Youtube allows people to post concert footage from cell phones. I don't see them getting rid of reaction videos. The concert videos don't usually have copyright claims because they aren't recordings the label owns, unless the artist lip syncs from a studio record during their shows. Also long before reaction videos, people have posted songs and entire albums. Old music programs like Soul Train and TV movies of the week that people taped from TV on their VCRs too. A lot of which are obscure, out of print, and not on any streaming services. Without them, a lot of the stuff would not be heard or seen. Especially TV shows that only had a few episodes befire being cancelled, so are not rerun in syndication.

Also, making the video small or blurring it out doesn't prevent copyright claims. People do that because some actual music videos will get blocked. But if they just use an audio only video, they don't have to do that. If you into the "show more" description on a reaction video or any video with music, even if it's not the focus of it like a home video with music playing on a radio in the background. If you see this "music in the video", then there is a copyright claim. The Youtube detectors put it up, not the poster of the video. If this is there, the video is demonetized and the record label gets any money made from the video views. Putting "fair use" on the video doesn't stop it either

Yup I know that. But was just talking about music only since this is a music thread. Some videos do get blocked by youtube. But some artist are ok with reaction video such as Richard Marx, Janis Ian and Martha Davis of the Motels. All have left positive responses to people who do reaction videos

Christopher Cross invited Jamel aka Jamal backstage at one of his concerts. Sting gave Twinsthenewtrend a shout out on The Tonight Show and SNL did a skit on them. Which they reacted to. razz Some of the movie ones like Reel Rejects get invited to movie premieres and do interviews with actors & directors

Nah, then it would just be a random surf tune, something for a Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello beach movie. razz John Lennon said Rock Lobster reminded him of Yoko's music and inspired him to start recording again. I could see Rock Lobster fitting in the Pee Wee's Playhouse TV show. I used to watch that on Saturday mornings. Miss Yvonne could probably be in the B-52s, at least look wise. lol

Yoko's music is horrible. She ruined the Double Fantasy album with her tracks on it. John Lennon's songs were grade A and Yoko's songs were grade F which unfortunately gives the Double Fantasy album grade average a C.

Maybe to you it is. Perhaps it's her voice you don't like, because all of the songs on the Double Fantasy album have the same session musicians. So if the same exact tracks were used & John sang them instead of Yoko, would they still be "terrible"? lol How about if Pat Benetar sang them? Yoko's most recent album came out in 2018. So she has an audience that buys her music without it having a connection to a John Lennon album. Not everybody is trying to make music to appeal to a big mainstream audience to get hit records on the radio. Some listeners dig a Diamanda Galás or a Sun Ra.

It's her voice, or lack of it. Yeah Pat Benatar would have done a better job. Yeah I get Yoko is an "artist" and not in the traditional sense. Yeah I don't care for her music. and I have listen to many of her songs from several different albums. Yes she will have a following, whether big or small. Will 100% of Earth's population hate her music, No!!! Every act or even bad movie, TV show, sports team, book and so on will have their fans and following. For me it has nothing to do with "mainstream or not". If I like it, I like it, if I don't, then I don't. Doesn't get more simple than that.

Well apparently John likes Yoko's singing and it was his choice to put his wife on his records just like Paul made his wife Linda a member of Wings. Linda wasn't originally a singer or keyboard player, she was a photographer. But Paul taught Linda how to play.

Yup that is true. John Lennon liked Yoko's artistic side, once again to each their own. Yup knew that about Linda as well. I'm not sure if Linda ever sang lead on a song or not. I know she was background vocals for sure. But for wives Ringo wins lol
