Dolly Parton declines Rock n' Roll HOF Induction

Varity says...

Dolly Parton has long been considered the Queen of Country, but the Nashville music titan was on track to earn a new title: Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. That is, until Parton bowed out of the race.

“Even though I am extremely flattered to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right,” the singer-songwriter wrote in a statement posted to social media. “I really do not want the votes split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.”

Parton continued, “I do hope that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again — if I’m ever worthy. This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do! My husband is a total rock ‘n’ roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one.”

Last month, Parton was nominated as a potential inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Beck, Duran Duran, Eminem, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon and A Tribe Called Quest. Previous nominees Pat Benatar, Kate Bush, Devo, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, Fela Kuti, MC5, the New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine and Dionne Warwick are also being considered again in 2022.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I would love to hear Dolly do a rock album! That would be cool. She is a class act. Love her.

Right? I just think it'd be amazing. Not country rock, but something like Bob Segar or Springsteen. We don't need her yelling like Metallia or Anthrax or something. And I'd love to hear her take on Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me" or "Unskinny Bop." Random I know, but it just sorta popped in my head. Poison had great harmonies on the latter, and Dolly could rock that shit.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Maybe the difference is that others feel they've earned the right?

I really think she's probably being literal here, in that she's been mostly a country artist, with certain pop sensibilities. And she sees her place at the HOF maybe a bit ill-advised for right now.

It's her being humble.

This debate has been going on for years.

Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston have come under fire for this very reason.

Ice Cube made it a point on stage to proclaim his rock credentials.

I don't really have a pony in this race but I suppose there's a point to be made for it.

I remember when Kendrick Lamar won the Pulitzer which was lets be honest intended for classical musicians with the occasional jazz musician here and there.

The reason for the controversy?

Kendrick Lamar is a not "composer" of music. Much if not most of the compositions are sampled. He's not even a singer. And I heard from one critic who said the subject matter will become dated.

Even jazz gets picked apart in these circles because it's majority improvised.

These are not my arguements but they are arguements nontheless.

So maybe Dolly's right.

I'm sure she's already in the country music HOF and has her grammy LAA.

it's a protest concerning those who never got it before her.

she's golden and wants the deserving to get in first.

OR

she thinks the RNRHoF is a crock o' shit

I choose the later. I lost all respect when they inducted a rapper with 2 albums in his discography. Dolly should have been inducted decades ago. I applaud her for politely saying no thanks.

I think honestly she has had too many friends of hers not even get looked at for this honor, one would be Kenny Rogers and another is Willie Friggin Nelson so I think thats partially her issue, though its not really an issue, but I think its also because she feels this is not the Grand Ole Opre here, or the CM HOF

Update: A tweet from Variety says...

Dolly Parton is still on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame shortlist despite the country icon asking to be removed because she hasn’t “earned that right.” The Foundation said in a statement that, in effect, it is up to the voters to decide if Parton is elected. apne.ws/oG8HxcN

Its a stark contrast in generations about being worthy of an award, in years past the Weekend calling for Grammy boycotts because he was not nominated, kanye of course always has a problem with losing or not being nominated.

Sex Pistols got inducted and didn't show up. I think Johnny Rotten even sent a note to be read refusing the induction. lol

Didn't Adele win some award and when she got onstage to get it, said Beyoncé should have won it instead?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

adele did it with Beyoncé and Billie Ellish did it with Meghan thee stallion but we all know this was BS "white" shame and woke culture on display which turns everyone off, especially when you are someone else in the category and Billie eilish is saying who should have won and you aren't mentioned I'd be like " what expert are you on anything"
