Vanity, Jody Watley, Janet Jackson, Apollonia, Sheila E, Sheena Easton, Madonna

Prince absolutely helped launch or enhance the careers of many of these artist or influenced them indirectly via the unique music sound he pioneered (in the case of Andre Simone producing Jody or Jimmy & Terry producing Janet)

The music from the aforementioned women were/are the soundtracks of my youth and to this day still hold a special place.

Madonna was the one exception that Prince never produced. Does anyone know if he in fact worked with her?

And of Vanity, Apollonia, Jody, Janet, Sheena, Sheila … who was your favorite female artist from that special time in the 80’s and early 90’s ?

And the intro to like a prayer and another song on the album. Was it called Act of contrition?

Don't think Prince ever worked with Janet though. Unless the OP is thinking of Jam and Lewis.

To my knowledge, he played rhythm guitar on "Like A Prayer" as well as that use of the weird soloing at the beginning, which was likely taken from the soloing in "Act of Contrition."

Seems like I also remember hearing he played on "Keep It Together." I don't know if that was ever confirmed or debunked. It'd be nice to have a solid yay or nay on any of it.

I can't imagine if they ever shared some studio time that he didn't play something on a song somewhere. Look at all he did on the Stevie Nicks track.

It's weird that he wasn't just credited. It's not like he was on Sony and Sony wouldn't let him play on a Warner Bros record. They were label mates. Why couldn't they just play and be open about it, aside from "Love Song?"

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

My head canon says he was a tremendous influence on Like a Prayer (the album). Not just the obvious credits. No evidence to support it other than circumstance. He did seem to conspicuously display a platinum copy of Like a Prayer on Paisley Park’s entry wall.

Many early 80s pop acts released attempts at more mature albums around 88-89. Prince released LoveSexy. Madonna released Like a Prayer. Wendy & Lisa’s look for Fruit at the Bottom was pretty close to Madonna’s patchouli & rosary bohemian chic. Martika released Love Thy Will Be Done. If Prince didn’t perform on uncredited tracks, it seems he was behind the scenes advising artists as a creative director. Maybe urging them to try more spiritual concepts. And yeah, there’s just something about Keep it Together that sounds like Prince.

To me, it was the groove of the rhythm guitar that makes me think I've heard he was on that track. One thing triggers another.

I like the work that he did with Sheena Easton.”Sugar Walls”,”101” and “Cool Love” are excellent tracks…perhaps better than some of the tracks that he was giving to his own female protégés!

Or Jodie either iirc so who knows what direction the OP is going beyond the 99th Madonna thread.

SHEENA EASTON!

I was a Sheena Easton fan AND a Prince fan when I found out that a newly written Prince track was to appear on her new A PRIVATE HEAVEN album. I was happy as a bearded clam when "Sugar Walls" ascended up the Billboard charts in early 1985. Prince gave Sheena's music an extra layer of "hip" at a time when she was featuring more aggressive, spikey pop music on her albums as opposed to the middle-of-the-road and adult contemporary pop that established her as a music superstar. Her media image was increasingly sexy and I feel Prince's involvment with her music helped propell that to a new, exciting level.

Cherry Red is releasing a new deluxe edition of A PRIVATE HEAVEN in February 2022. It will include remastered, extended versions of all of the singles from the album plus Sugar Walls (the Roman Version)" for the first time.

I agree. I think Prince really liked and respected Sheena as an artist. I feel the quality of the music he did with her was perhaps a notch above what he did with most others.

I was a HUGE fan of Madonna's LIKE A PRAYER era music and image (and Wendy & Lisa's FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM) but I have always felt "Love Song" was a lousy song.

Well listen, no one's ever tried to promote it as a masterpiece. lol It's corny, and almost doesn't fit on Like A Prayer at all. There's no video for it, it was never a single. It was barely noted that Prince and Madonna had collaborated at all. It feels like an afterthought on her record. It actually fits better on Lovesexy or Graffiti Bridge.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yes, odd that they never promoted their collaboration. Tho Madonna seemed to like the lyrics, since she repeated them in Hung Up. (I swear she did it again in 4 Minutes, but I can't find evidence & don't feel like playing it right now.)

Goddamn she sure did, didn't she?! I never picked up on that!

"Love Song"

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
And those who run
Seem to have all the fun

"Hung Up"

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run seem to have all the fun
I'm caught up, I don't know what to do

She also resang a line from "Vogue" in "Deeper and Deeper."

"..let your body move to the music."

There's also a moment in "Justify My Love," and it's likely unintentional, where she says:

I'm not afraid of who you are
We can fly!

When she says, "flyyyyy,"

I almost always hear Prince in "Positivity" singing, "Or U can fly high right by Spooky and all that he crawls 4..."
It's not just the word, it's how she sings it. Again, unintentional on her part, but it definitely makes me think of "Positivity."

I don't see anything "4 Minutes," off hand.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

yeah,it's clear that Prince had alot of respect and admiration for Sheena as an artist. She played a big part in the songs that he gave her.She co-wrote "La,La,La,He,He,Hee" and even wrote all the lyrics to "The Arms Of Orion" (according to her).

No, he is not. He knew. Why would you include Madonna in a list of people that you know have a direct/indirect connection to Prince musically, and then wonder if that ONE PERSON ever worked with Prince?

He's on the internet. All he had to do was Google "Prince Madonna collaborate" and Love Song would have been right there. It's silly that people continue to do this, as if they have ZERO knowledge of search engines. I just don't buy it.
