Vanity, Jody Watley, Janet Jackson, Apollonia, Sheila E, Sheena Easton, Madonna Prince absolutely helped launch or enhance the careers of many of these artist or influenced them indirectly via the unique music sound he pioneered (in the case of Andre Simone producing Jody or Jimmy & Terry producing Janet) The music from the aforementioned women were/are the soundtracks of my youth and to this day still hold a special place. Madonna was the one exception that Prince never produced. Does anyone know if he in fact worked with her? And of Vanity, Apollonia, Jody, Janet, Sheena, Sheila … who was your favorite female artist from that special time in the 80’s and early 90’s ?

And the intro to like a prayer and another song on the album. Was it called Act of contrition?
Don't think Prince ever worked with Janet though. Unless the OP is thinking of Jam and Lewis.

My head canon says he was a tremendous influence on Like a Prayer (the album). Not just the obvious credits. No evidence to support it other than circumstance. He did seem to conspicuously display a platinum copy of Like a Prayer on Paisley Park’s entry wall. Many early 80s pop acts released attempts at more mature albums around 88-89. Prince released LoveSexy. Madonna released Like a Prayer. Wendy & Lisa’s look for Fruit at the Bottom was pretty close to Madonna’s patchouli & rosary bohemian chic. Martika released Love Thy Will Be Done. If Prince didn’t perform on uncredited tracks, it seems he was behind the scenes advising artists as a creative director. Maybe urging them to try more spiritual concepts. And yeah, there’s just something about Keep it Together that sounds like Prince. [Edited 2/22/22 17:16pm]

I like the work that he did with Sheena Easton.”Sugar Walls”,”101” and “Cool Love” are excellent tracks…perhaps better than some of the tracks that he was giving to his own female protégés!

SHEENA EASTON!
I was a Sheena Easton fan AND a Prince fan when I found out that a newly written Prince track was to appear on her new A PRIVATE HEAVEN album. I was happy as a bearded clam when "Sugar Walls" ascended up the Billboard charts in early 1985. Prince gave Sheena's music an extra layer of "hip" at a time when she was featuring more aggressive, spikey pop music on her albums as opposed to the middle-of-the-road and adult contemporary pop that established her as a music superstar. Her media image was increasingly sexy and I feel Prince's involvment with her music helped propell that to a new, exciting level.
Cherry Red is releasing a new deluxe edition of A PRIVATE HEAVEN in February 2022. It will include remastered, extended versions of all of the singles from the album plus Sugar Walls (the Roman Version)" for the first time.

I agree. I think Prince really liked and respected Sheena as an artist. I feel the quality of the music he did with her was perhaps a notch above what he did with most others.

I was a HUGE fan of Madonna's LIKE A PRAYER era music and image (and Wendy & Lisa's FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM) but I have always felt "Love Song" was a lousy song.

Yes, odd that they never promoted their collaboration. Tho Madonna seemed to like the lyrics, since she repeated them in Hung Up. (I swear she did it again in 4 Minutes, but I can't find evidence & don't feel like playing it right now.)

I almost always hear Prince in "Positivity" singing, "Or U can fly high right by Spooky and all that he crawls 4..." Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
