CD SALES rising for the first time in 17 years Over the last few years VINYL has been selling and increasing helped by things like Record Store day, and this year Apil 2022 with Taylor Swift at the helm of Record Store day, it might be the most lucrative yet. But last year CD sales rose and many attached this reason to Taylor and Adele and also BTS having records, though I think it is more than just that. Its the emerging YouTube channels that are talking up classic stuff to a new audience, older music is also outselling NEW by alot. YouTube channels such as Professor Of Rock has really impacted older artists but also bringing attention to older artists new releases. Other channels that do similar things many of them focusing on Rock and Metal and progressive rock have brought some sales to that physical product. Though streaming is still the main thing consumers are getting, one opinion has been that people are getting HIP that streaming is really hurting the artists (took them long enough to catch on) it does seem that the tide is getting a little rough for streaming, and maybe leading to rethink payouts which we all know is going to be passed on to the consumer and higher subscription fees.

Man, just the thought of getting rid of my CDs makes me stick to my stomach! Over 35 years of time and effort put in to collecting. I don't have room for a bulky vinyl collection. CDs are the only way to go for me. And I'm not paying to stream music I already own. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

No, you seem to have some problems to read. This year, CD and vinyl sales are decreasing, compared to last year (-11.5%) 2021 was a commercial peak. 2022 is suffering from the vinyl crisis. [Edited 2/14/22 13:06pm]

Good news, things go in cycles. Paying a streaming service for music I own has never been a option. I've kept a CD/DVD/R+W whatever built computer so I could still rip and add my music to a digital data base to stream view my iPod or Raspberry Pi. I hope the trend continues, fingers crossed.

Last year RSD moved what? 2 millions units max? That's a drop of water in the ocean. I hope to be proven wrong though. But that's not the case as of now.

It may be a DROP in the ocean but the reality is last year only 16 albums (new releases) were certified gold, and I believe out of that only 2 or 4 were platnum, but thats because almost all these artists depend on streaming and very little on physical product moving.

I don't care about streaming. My point is that physical sales are declining, including CDs, and that the vinyl sales already reached their peak last year. That's all. I wished it was the contrary : with more and more sales, production cost should have decreased consequently, and then triggered more sales, etc.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit whoâs never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

A lot of people today don't own a stereo. They don't put CD or cassette players in cars anymore as a default. Many new PCs/laptops don't have a disc drive. I haven't seen a Radio Shack in years and when I was last in one, it was mostly cell phones and no stereos. So the general audience wouldn't have any reason to buy a CD, record, or tape. Best Buy stores don't even carry CDs and their DVD/Blu Ray section gets smaller & smaller, but they sell them online. But many people still don't shop online though. That's one reason Adele sells so much because her CDs are sold in stores where people can see it. Even in places that don't normally sell CDs like Walgreen's, Whole Foods, & gas stations. Physical music started to lose popularity when Napster came out. So an entire generation grew up with free music. Video games took over mainstream popularity from music CDs. Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more than any other entertainment product including the Thriller album. No I get that I am just saying we are just six weeks into the new year, different releases and carry over releases from artists were spiking those sales still. To end last year you just had Adele pretty much and in this new year so far for me personally there have been great new releases from Mellencamp and Eddie Vedder but they are not beyond week one or two sell to your base type artists, that get very little play anywhere so I still think its early to call this year anything. Back in 2020 at this time I thought a great year was ahead I had already seen six shows, and a few weeks later the whole world shut down some longer than others so after that whole mess, I dont forecast and put much in long term. RSD has released there list and they will also be doing a drop in June as expected, tons of artists on board for both so unless we dont have another shut down lose our shit becuase of a variant type response or a war with Russia or something unforseen I think things will pick up soon, some are still feeling the waters out.

Well now with the RSD list out for April and also some of a list for June RSD drop, I spoke to a few record store owners here in NYC who I frequent and always get "my list" to order for too, they are saying its the best list they have seen yet, though it may not have a major one to jump out at you, its got something for everyone and they have been getting calls on everything. The Prince and Pearl Jam for JUNE have been getting the most calls to order, the Prince has a big number (for RSD) of copies close to 25,000. So were surprised about Taylor Swift only doing a 7" but already tons of responses and calls on it and again they are making a ton of copies for RSD, some are saying her reasoning is that "1989" regarded as her biggest and best record is going to be the next re-do this year and they did not want to "tarnish" the RSD limited thing with a Major Release that has unlimited copies on cd and vinyl plus she likes to release them weeks or months apart on different formats cause she knows, her fans will buy it both ways. I also think now with most cities lifting restrictions, all of a sudden everyone is jumping on tour again quickly, though some still postpone, some have literally re-announced cancellations into new shows, so I think all of that is going to spark and kick into sales of all kinds.

That's interesting news. I assumed it was due to Taylor Swift re-releasing her old material with new vocals every few months. I've seen a lot of artists release their newer material via the vinyl format, but not so much in CD format.

Who has a vehicle with a CD player? I hate how all the new ones just have bluetooth. I'd rather be charging my phone while I drive than draining its battery and using data streaming my TIDAL or whatever.

I do and my car is a 2016. I don't know why these automakers think cd players are so archaic. The more expensive cd players are live and well. CD players have outlasted MP3 players which were used to stream music. Check out Audio Advisor's catalog. CD players are still standing strong. Don't laugh at my funk

From my personal experience - once you started the convenience of streaming, the varity of choice and the excellent sound (up to high res), there is hardly a way back. And this coming from a guy who has spent a considerable amount of his income on vinyl and CDs when he was younger...
Unfortunately, streaming is one of the many conveniences catering to (or causing?) a reduced attention span. Anyone seen a 16 year old listening intensely to 20 minutes 5 song seague by the same artist while admiring cover work and lyrics? Or even a 70 minute plus session?
