The Jazz Playlist (Even For The Uninitiated).

Just thought I'd share a few of my favorite jazz tracks that I've recently discovered or is on my ipod playlist that I think most will enjoy.

>

"Be Courageous" by Thompson Egbo-Egbo.

This one I heard on the radio one Saturday afternoon on a favorite radio show of mine by Walter Venafro.

>

"Love Is The Message" by Yusef Dayes, Alfa Mist Ft. Mansur Brown

London jazz scene!

>

"Mirage" by Jon Luc Ponte

Came across this on a Spotify playlist. Somehow I picture Crokett and Tubbs cruising to this on a sunny afternoon.

>

"Hopopono" by GoGo Penguin

Mercury Prize nominees (and possibly winners) from a few years back. There's strong debate on whether this is jazz or not.

>

"Come As You Are" by Charlie Hunter.

Jazz bassist extraordinaire Hunter's take on the grunge classic. Depending on your attatchment to the original you'll either love it or hate it. You know where I stand.

>

"Inner Flight" by Makaya McCraven.

Chicago drummer McCraven is a chop shop artist. Phenomenal drummer that he is, he takes his live shows and remixes them in the studio to awesome affect.

>

"San Lorenzo" by The Pat Metheny Group.

I've gone most of my life having never heard this song until last week when my "friend" Walter Venafro played him on the radio. It's instantly one of my favorite songs.

*studio version found on Spotify

>

"The Eraser" by Christian Scott.

Christian Scott is easily one of the best artists alive. For the uninitiated there's no better place to start than with his cover of Thom Yorke's "The Eraser".

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQcaSiLr21ovvKTs7mMQcYw4xW3NlPkGIUNb4Mk-8p2_OgkHSitY4S2ltLY3DozSc4svkg&usqp=CAU

https://www.youtube.com/w...Ijh2oUoU_M

>

"Lift Off" by Tom Misch and Yusef Dayes Ft. Rocco Palladino.

Came across this while doing a search for Yusef Dayes. Yusef Dayes is one of today's premiere drummers.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS8A0wwUF4btBXEvApnfXaNVxFz-WF-Jg-tyAeK1e3Xi0aLNMfqV9Kk7SmUeyIVZcid-90&usqp=CAU

https://www.youtube.com/w...7GaK516Wkk

>

"Sniff" by Domi and JD Beck.

Teen phenoms Domi and JD Beck have been threatening to put out an album for over a year now. It's time to stop waiting and just enjoy the NORD Live's that they put out occasionally.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTceUsUcUHDpItX2-MSGbay6qny9vulDeVOuElWBg-4WRXq7_-jz3gs5lz_V0VjWmYCN2Q&usqp=CAU

https://www.youtube.com/w...JDARjzHhZE

>

"Spain" and "Departing" by Jesus Molina.

Jesus Molina is an internet phenomenon and for good reason. His keyboard skills are top notch.

Here's two songs from him, one a spectacle of riches, the other more on his Christopher Cross tip if Cross were a jazz musician.

Of course I'm familiar with George Benson and Grover Washington. Will need to research the rest.

Any suggested tracks?

Great playlist. It´s funny because I was just thinking right now if Alfa Mist was ever mentioned at this forum. Alfa Mist is one of the new artists I listen to most.

Most definitely.

I had a few tracks of his I could've easily put on here, but I just couldn't resist the Mist-Dayes-Brown combo.

The London scene is something else.

Ghost Note

.

Not pure jazz, but a jazzy funk. Mono Neon plays bass there. They are Prince fans and there is a small snippet of America in the middle.

I'm familiar with Mono Neon. He sits in on a lot of Ziljian Live sessions.

He also made a splash remixing Cardi B rants a few years ago. biggrin

While I'm usually drawn to the funkier and soulful end of Jazz I try to keep an open mind.

Some of these are working for me and sending me down new rabbit holes.

I spent a day doing that with Domi and JD Beck just to try to get my head around how this kid is playing the drums like that. It's really amazing for its speed and subtlety...

Music is life music

Thanks for the post!

Your welcome.

I tend to lean more towards the fushiony side of jazz which is probably why I like Christian Scott so much.

JD beck MUST be influenced by Jungle. How he plays it I have no idea.

Love Domi and Beck BTW - they're both great, but I don't think that I've ever been more impressed by a drummer (and I've seen legends like Elvin Jones). There's been loads of great musicians emerge in recent years (Mono Neon, Thundercat, Lious Cole etc), it kind of makes Prince's concern about the state of traditional musicianship seem really misplaced.

I read somewhere that the internet has ushered in a new wave of virtuoso musicians (and I didn't say invented) and I think it's true. The visibility, plus the willingness to add more mainstream sounds that would make Wynton Marsalis bash his head in, are major factors.

I really get a kick out of Domi and Beck, and his playing is amazing, but for my money no one beats Yusef Dayes when it comes to drumming. The things he does.

But Domi and Beck were featured by The New York Times no less last year so they're poised to make an impact, if only they'd release their album already!

A few of my choices for jazz are

Norman Brown

Boney James

Wayman Tisdale

Lindsey Webster

George Benson

Grover Washington

Brian Culbertson

Of course I'm familiar with George Benson and Grover Washington. Will need to research the rest.

Any suggested tracks?

Boney - Albums The Beat, Futuresoul, Honestly, and Shine

Wayman Tisdale Great bassist and former NBA player - Albums Power Forward, Hang Time,

In The Zone, and Face To Face

Norman Brown - Albums After The Storm, Just Chillin

Lindsey Webster - Songs Fool Me Once and It's Not You, It's Me Albums You Change and Love Inside

Thievery Corporation - They mix jazz with other elements. Check out their albums Saudade and the Richest Man In Babylon. I like Un Simple histoire from that album and another song they have out there called Lebanese Blonde.
