R.I.P. Mtume James Foreman was born and raised in South Philadelphia. He’s the son of jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, however he was raised by James “Hen Gates” Forman, a neighborhood jazz pianist in Philadelphia. Mtume grew up in a musical atmosphere the place jazz musicians frequented his mother and father’ dwelling. He produced Stephanie Mills and formed his own group called Mtume that had hits “Juicy Fruit” and “You, Me and He”. Tawatha Agee was featured on vocals. He also cowrote the big hit by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway called “The Closer I Get To You”. Music Royalty in Motion

His early work with Stephanie Mills was incredible. Put Your Body In It is one of my favorites but What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin and Never Knew Love Like This Before earned him awards as her producer. He also will forever be known as Mr. Juicy Fruit with his own band Mtume but they had some great tunes before they broke out big with Juicy Fruit. I like Just Funnin and Kiss The World Goodbye. RIP James Mtume Don't laugh at my funk

James and Reggie also produced Phyllis Hyman's most successful album at Arista "You Know How To Love Me". They were scheduled to produce the next album until Phyllis went to the press and panned the album. So they passed on producing her final album for the label. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! Mad respect for the brother RIP. Enjoyed the debates in the 90's about the "soul" of Jazz music. When some young jazz lions attempted to compare the genre to classical music. More importantly some attempted to "go back to the womb" despite an attempt to remake what had already been composed and arranged and deem it "new".

I was just thinking...."Juicy Fruit" was a really unique, groundbreaking R&B single in 1983.With those bold, suggestive lyrics,it's surprising that R&B radio really supported it later, the infectious beat was heavily sampled by rappers.

Also "Back Together Again". My absolute fave Mtume/Lucas production, the song is perfect in every way and they added the icing on the cake with the background vocals in the fade. One of my fave Mtume moments was when he read Stanley Crouch for fifth during their Miles Davis debate. Thank god for YouTube, all of us can witness it.
