The Betty Davis Documentary Is Finally Out...

I've been waiting years for the Betty Davis (Funk singer wife of Miles Davis) documentary "They Say I'm Different" to be released. I just saw it on DVD on Amazon and ordered it. Can't wait to watch it. I really enjoy her funk albums and want to hear her story.

.
I saw it on TV Last year. Most remarkable thing is that Mrs. Davis is never seen as her present-day self in the documentary. You only hear her voice...

She has protected her physical identity for years--not surprised. She was born in 1945, which makes her 75 years old now. I want to hear what she has to say and see this doc.

I thought it has been out :hmm2:

And yeah, what a beautifully strange documentary. Very surreal, weird, compelling, interesting & deeply moving. I had to revisit it a couple of times to make sense of what the hell I just watched, and everytime I do I end up feeling more amazed than the previous time. My only gripe was that it was too short, but I guess that was the point too isn’t it? Leaving a little bit more for the mystery. I’m so happy more people are watching it, it’s worth every minute.

I suggest everyone to check De Angela Duff’s video presentation about her & the film on YouTube, I promise you it will tickle your nerdy sensibility.

I have one question: is that really her narrating the film? I ask because when the band called her on the phone, she sounded completely different than the lady in the narrative.

Ive seen about 2 documentaries on her...not sure if this was the same one. There was an animated version...and another with her speaking about her experinces herself and she was in a sillouette instead of you being able to see her in full.

Thanks Purplethunder3121! thumbs up!

Bought this and watched it last night. Few things I came away with;

• They put out an album I wasn't aware of https://www.discogs.com/r...-1968-1969 out in 2016 which wasn't as good as her 3 albums. Just glad to hear any new material from her that I had not heard before. It was also cool to hear Miles giving instructions (very minimal at the beginning/ending of a couple of tracks).

• It was depressing to hear that this creative force of nature was shut down professionally because she wouldn't conform to the expectations. Not sure if her mental issues came from this trauma/rejection or were just a part of her past but I felt for her.

• There's seemingly very little video of her performing since they used the same clip in a dozen different ways throughout the film. Not a complaint because I was glad to see it, but it made me think about going back over 40 years to gather all of this info must have been insanely difficult.

It's too bad she's only getting such a wide recognition now but it's wonderful she did make as much as she did and it's now available to stream and buy and she's getting to reap the benefits.

I saw this back in 2018 and I remember enjoying it but also feeling a little bit longing after. I wish there had been more. More details about her life, more clips from live performances, and more details about her brief but powerful music career. Maybe I need to watch again, but I just remember the credits rolling and thinking, "where's the rest"?
If you will, so will I
