I wouldn't say I am a Nirvana freak but after hearing their MTV Unplugged I went out and bought every one of their CD's. That was the best MTV Unplugged set (next to the Alice In Chains Unplugged)! It is sad however about Kurt. Such talent lost in an instant. cry

The more you listen the more you will like. Kurt's voice tends to grow on you.

OK, now here I come to spoil the party. Nirvana, IMO, is just sooo OVER-RATED!!! I mean, really, they are. I thought they were OK, and they had some pretty catchy songs and stuff (I liked Lithium a lot), but come on. How in the hell could you compare these guys to, say, The Beatles. Nirvana wasn't innovative or didn't try any new techniques or anything. They were just hyped as THE BAND to exemplify the then-new sound of grunge. I even thought Mudhoney did a better job than Nirvana. My verdict:they were good, but not great.

The major contribution of Nirvana is that, when "Nevermind" came out, that was an absolute turning point in popular music. All of those spandex/hair bands of the late 80's were done with one swipe. Trends usually come more gradually, but they ushered in a new movement (alternative) and thats why they are important.

I do think "In Utero" is one of the best sounding rock records of all time thanks to the production/recording of producer Steve Albini.

I saw Nirvana in 1989 at a small venue. The album was "Bleach" and it changed me at the time. They played their asses off and were like "Fuck You" punk rock. Then trashed everything at the end of the set.

I was into Soundgarden too but "Nevermind" was the turning point? Maybe for the masses but me and my friends left the hair band era with Metallica's "Kill Em All".

The cool thing is that Prince was always there with me. Not so much my friends though...shrug

Nirvana wasn't over-rated at all. They're songs were different from those of any other bands at the time, even now. They were definitely revolutionary. While other bands come and go, Nirvana has stayed alive, even 9 years since Kurt's death. The songs never grow old, and I think they'll be remembered for a very long time.

I do agree.. I believe their songs will be remembered for a very very long time!! Though, they weren't the beatles... but as you said, when they're still selling music and they're still kinda populer even after years after Kurt's death they're definitely going to be rememebered!!

That's where you're wrong. George Martin was the PRODUCER!!! The Beatles still held up their end of the work. Anyways, I'm not saying that Nirvana's bad or anything. I think they made some alright music for their time. I'm just wondering why their receiveing all this praise, cuz frankly, I don't see why. And it's probably cuz Kurt died anyway.

I heard a jazz version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" a few weeks ago on our college jazz radio station. It was amazing.

Nirvana is fucking great.
