Adele One Night Only (CBS & Paramount+)

Did anyone watch the CBS special with Adele (and Oprah) tonight.

"When We Were Young" is such a great fucking song. "Hold On" was gut wrenching.

The thing with the couple (not spoiling just yet) had me crying so hard, not even exaggerating. I suppose I just like seeing people happy.

Thoughts from those who watched?

I was just bawling through it. Then, about an hour in - I'm really bawling. It was all so well put together.

It's on the Paramount+ app, but don't know if that's over there.

There is a UK special coming on the 21st I believe. It'll be a whole different program.

Im going to have to sit down and really listen to Adele. I like her voice I just never listened to any of her albums. They say shes good at singing songs about heartbreak. I dont think anyone will ever sing about a broken heart with the same conviction as Phyllis Hyman did, but I will give Adele a try. Im deperate for some "new" quality music right now.

I bet they rerun it over the weekend, or nearer to Thanksgiving. Keep an eye out. It's also on the Paramount+ app. Might be a good time to get that free trial.

My eyes welled up & before you know it the waterworks were in full effect. I still don’t have the interest in pursuing her music, but dammit that performance put the cynic in me to rest.

Amazing show! Yes, she definitely deserves her success.

I forgot about it even though they have been promoting it heavily. I will try to find it somewhere online. 🧐

It was on the television where I was at and the L.A. sunset looked pretty. I remember her saying that she had hand-picked her event audience--that was cute, but the broadcast was mostly background effect to me with the exception of the really popular songs that caught my ear--I don't have a laser-focus on her career or personal life. I generally have neither bad nor great impressions, but great for Adele! I do wonder which jazz artists may have or will interpret her songs.

I also remember back when Jamie Foxx had his network tv concert after he had gotten super-popular.

It's interesting how the media exec's work out these kind of events!

Her album leaked this morning and I've been listening to it all day. It's pretty great. There were moments listening to it when I remembered how I felt listening to The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill for the first time: very personal, very old soul with "new" tricks, thematic, sad but warm. And of course that voice is just stellar. Part of why I think people latch on to her the way they do is that she puts out real music, with actual melodies and song structure, and a thoughtful lyric. Not just grooves with minimal changes, with a repeated phrase or word masquarading as a chorus. If she can do it, why don't others?

I think she sells physical product like CDs because they are sold in a lot of places that don't normally sell music like Walgreen's, Whole Foods, & gas stations. It's there where people can see it and not just in a record store that most people don't go to or may not even have in their town/city. Not everybody shops online and they can't use cash or checks for that. Many people still don't know how to use a computer in the first place. If the general public see a CD in a store, they will more likely know it exists and purchase it. Someone buying a CD online is likely to already know about it. Also notice that this album is coming out around the Christmas season. There was an article recently that a lot of vinyl albums by other acts are being delayed because Adele's label ordered a large amount of her new one.

Maybe because in general the type of music she makes doesn't sell, or with today's audience get as many streams as what's on Top 40 radio. Just because one act has a lot of success doesn't automatically mean somebody else will. Like in the 1980s, no other smooth jazz act had the huge sales of Kenny G. None of the other acts Quincy Jones produced sold like Thriller.

The venue is amazing, I love the Griffith observatory. I didn’t know people performed there though.
