Minnie Riperton - Minnie’s Lament

https://youtu.be/aMaVb3Sp4hw

It’s her birthday 🦋 so, it’s definitely fitting. I love this song, and it never ceases to give me chills. Minnie sounded like she was conjuring ancient spirits in the recording studio, I can’t imagine what those people who witnessed the recording felt like at the time. Bet you there was alot of cigarette breaks after that.

Minnie has always been so severely under appreciated. Outside of the Japan reissues in the 90s, I never understood why Capitol continuously passed on remastering her albums on CD? I know there were some UK twofers but I passed on those due to the terrible artwork. I had hope when a deluxe edition of "Perfect Angel" was released a couple years ago but they went dark again on her catalog.

Yeah, I noticed that her import releases are far superior than her US releases. My introduction to Minnie was a 2001 2-CD set compilation titled “Petals”, one of the best GH albums I ever purchased, greatly packages, produced & remastered. And yes, I later had those two twofers album you mentioned lol but only because they were cheaper to get where I’m from at the time, and the fact that her albums were nowhere to be found.

She’s still an enigma as a music figure & I’m not sure why her catalog doesn’t get the attention it needs, god knows she got sampled many times by heavy hitters and superstars like Mariah always cite her as a major influence, you’d think by now her music gets a constant resurgence. I feel her late producer Charles Stepney gets the same dismissive treatment even though his body of work was insanely brilliant. I hope Epic makes another SDE out of her “Adventures In Paradise”.
