Why do we put labels on music?

Can you feel MJ's music? Does it make your head nod? Move your feet? Draws you to the dance floor? Makes you forget all and everything around you? Immerse with the music, the beat? Takes you to a higher place?

Thought so... cool

With MJ stealing James Brown's dance moves, I'd say he left himself open to such conversations.

“Workin’ Day and Night” “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)” “Get On The Floor” “The Things I Do For You” “Burn This Disco Out” “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” “Another Part Of Me” just a few jams that prove that Michael could be funky when he wanted to be wink

.

And do not forget about that other funk track on The Jacksons' Destiny album, All Night Dancin. cool

I love Jamiroquai’s music.I especially like the way they stick with their brand of retro-funk and disco without venturing into hip-hop or other more recent musical styles. And yes…’Automaton’ is a strong album indeed.

I once read an interview with George Clinton where he stated Michaels most funky tracks haven't been heard by the public. I'm not sure of the year but it was between 1992 and 1998.

George Clinton has not been that funky in a long time. Most of his stuff is real hip hop dominated since the 90s.

I would not title Michael jackson songs Funky. More pop, rock and soul oriented. Some early songs maybe which he did with The Jacksons are and songs on his first solo album like Don't stop till you could be described as funky.

I'm not sure what he knows about that. I'm guessing being in the business he probably has heard lots of unreleased music by several different artist.

Loads of bands have done funky on occasion, where people would never draw the comparison. MJ too.

But don't forget where it all started. 1926, when Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington started recording jazz that actually sounded fonky. Music not thought of as funk in musicology circles, but some of it as funky as anything you ever heard. 1926 was the birth of modern music.
