None of these cover arts were fitting for the album, IMHO. Not that the final one chosed by Sony was. But it was more fitting though graphically to the tone of the album. Still, it was a real letdown compared the beautiful Dangerous, History and BOTDF. I would have preferred something with the photo shoots of Albert Watson, that were inserted in the booklet. The whole thing would have made a great poster : https://images.app.goo.gl...etxj3xQUR9 The cover art of the singles were awful. The less worst was the one for Butterflies, but still. They weren't very appealing for the casual buyer, or even for the fans collectors. They should have used real photos of MJ, such as the Arno Bani ones, or Albert Watson's. Heartbreaker, Cry, The Lost Children, and maybe even the title track I would've replaced

Really liked this album when it 1st came out from the 1st track through Butterflies. After that, the only song that I dug was the last one on the album (Threatend, I think). * Forgot and didn't like the "Tommy Mottola Is The Devil" pics from when this album came out. Hated seeing him look dejected and disconnected. Really bad look for MJJ that distracted from what was, otherwise, a solid album. | |

On a related note, Janet Jackson was just interviewed by Tyra Banks on Dancing With The Stars. All of the songs on tonight's episode are by Janet. I didn't think that was something to start a thread about, so just putting it here. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. I think Michael should have used several Pharrell-produced jams for this album.”Rock Your Body” is a great song.Why did Michael reject that song?! The album needed a few more really strong uptempo tracks.The Rodney Jerkins stuff is just ‘ok’ to me. One, Pharell would have given some demos to MJ's "manager" at the time, but he didn't submitted them to him. That story saidJ never listened to the songs, amd was never aware that Pharell gave it to his manager. Two, MJ wanted a co-credit on the composition of the songs and on the producing, and that was a no-go for Pharell. Though, IIRC, final credits were shared with Timberlake, but only for the lyrics. Rock Your Body would have been cool for MJ, since it would have showcased for the first time his beat boxing. After the surprise success of Butterflies, Sony US understood that oldschool rnb was the way to go to sell the album in the US. So they warned rnb radios and DJ's that the two next singles would be Heaven Can Wait and Break Of Dawn. So rnb radios began to play Heaven Can Wait by march of 2002. It charted for 16 weeks but the promo single, a remix or even a radio edit never materialized, since Sony announced the end of the promotion by April. Break Of Dawn was added in Number Ones, in the hope of resuming US promotion of Invincible were they left it at the time. Hadn't MJ been arrested at the release of Number Ones, they would have promoted it after One More Chance. At least that was the original plan. In that original plan, One More Chance was supposed to have a music video before the release of Number Ones, but MJ rejected their original idea for the video. |

I think thats what Mike was saying when he went on his F Sony tirade. Cry was a terrible idea as a track from the start. But at the time R Kelly's name was gold. If MJ was upset about it being released as a single, he should have thought about it before adding it to the album as the only humanitarian anthem. So he knew this would be eventually used by Sony as a single, especially in Europe where Heal The World and Earth Song had tremendous success. [Edited 11/10/21 9:10am] |

"Stranger In Moscow" seems the most 80s of everything. The vocals could've been a bit louder. Overall, it sounds like a song from an 80s movie that becomes a huge hit on its own. "Blood on the Dance Floor" is a total miss. "Heartbreaker" sounds like an outtake from a soundtrack or something, like a weird song on Footloose or Beverly Hills Cop. "Scream"'s chorus was good, and some of the verses were good, but hinted at "Threatened" or "Thriller" or something spooky. "Black or White" came across really fun. Some British layered guitars and vocals that kept it square in the 80s. The "I ain't scared of no sheets" sections were well done, too. The rap felt under utilized. "You Rock My World" using a "Human Nature" sample makes it sound more like a last minute idea; the last song to be mixed for the project. The bass and other parts were good, but that sh-sh-sh percussion section ruins it. "You Are Not Alone" as a mid-tempo bop is a new idea. I like that part of it. "Love Never Felt So Good" wasn't bad at all. I think the bass may have been a bit too aggressive or funky for an otherwise tamer melody and chord progression. Just dial it back a notch.
