Recommend new or recent music with a MPLS or Prince Sound?

Haven’t seen a thread like this in a while.

What new or recent songs are out there that seem inspired by Prince or the MPLS sound?

Here are some suggestions:

Juice by Lizzo - sounds like a track that could be fronted by The Time

Sympathy by Daley - sounds like something from ATWIAD or UTCM

Ooh La La by Jessie Ware - calls to mind Sheila E / Oliver’s House

Digital Witness by Saint Vincent - another track that sounds like Sheila E

Tough Love by Jessie Ware - has a Little Red Corvette vibe

Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa - sounds like a protégée track

Gust of Wind by Pharrell - reminded me of Alexander ONeal / What Is This Thing Called Love

Princess Pouty by Ian Isiah - sounds like Controversy / 1999 era

Sympathy by Daley - sounds like something from ATWIAD or UTCM This sounds like 80s R&B in general; not getting a huge MPLS vibe on it; song is very well done though

Ooh La La by Jessie Ware - calls to mind Sheila E / Oliver’s House This reminds me more of Mary Jane Girls, or even The Jets

Digital Witness by Saint Vincent - another track that sounds like Sheila E I have to say, this was sort of unlistenable. The production was interesting, but I didn't enjoy her singing. I know, I know, probably an unpopular opinion. The song reminds me of Fagget Fairies or Basement Jaxx.

Tough Love by Jessie Ware - has a Little Red Corvette vibe Vibe is putting it lightly. The music sounds like an updated version of LRC. The high hat, the toms knocking around, the chord progression... I'd be suing someone! haha

Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa - sounds like a protégée track Fun track; has more of a new-wave edge to it, yet it reminds me of... something. Part of it sounds like "Break My Stride" from Matthew Wilder, mixed with Human League.

Gust of Wind by Pharrell - reminded me of Alexander ONeal / What Is This Thing Called Love Is this a left over track from Daft Punk? That's all I can think of when I hear it. It also sounds like something that may have fit on Man of the Woods by Justin Timberlake. (Moreso that than the Daft Punk thing.)

Princess Pouty by Ian Isiah - sounds like Controversy / 1999 era Feels like more 80s R&B that tried to lift from Prince. A cute little song.

I should note, none of them were terrible, sans the one noted.

Most of Dam-Funk’s music has a strong Prince influence, although he mixes it with west coast G funk.

Thanks. Yeah, the St Vincent track is an acquired taste. I don’t play it often. It reminds me of Sheila’s tracks, like Toy Box and Yellow.

Can you recommend any tracks?

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I get a Zapp / Roger vibe from the tracks. Nice.

Nothing. There are a few tunes that was mentioned like Juice by Lizzo. Someone even mentioned Gust of Wind by Pharrell...however on that same album "Gush" has more of a purple vibe than that tune like Dance 4 Me or Lavaux.

I have been feeling DJ Spair's "Work Out" which could have been a Vanity 6 tune.

Also feeling XL Middleton "You're So Different"

First Avenue performer Tickle Torture - Psychic Playmate

Elektrik Red - Friend Lover

Jasmine Sullivan - Don't Make Me Wait

I really don't hear Sheila in that St. V song. "Yellow" is jazzy, but eh. It's whatever.

I always throw back to someone like Confection. They use all the 80s instruments and make great MPLS influenced music. They're an Aussie duo. I don't know if they've put out stuff lately, but their first two albums are worth finding. They're on Spotify. Confection and Privation Conversations are great. They do a couple of covers (not Prince) here and there, too.

I think you'll like them. That first self-titled album was just so fun back in the day. I don't even remember how I found them.

St. Vincent is a hit or miss for me... I love some of her songs and hate others... Why are people trying to find Prince so hard in other people's music? There will never be another Prince, as he said. lol

She said it was a tribute to Prince herself too.

Bernadette Cooper's (Klymaxx) two new songs are pretty funky.

It's cheating a bit to just say an associate I guess, but if I'm in the mood for something that 'sounds like Prince that isn't Prince' (and that isn't Janelle Monae's "Make Me Feel"), I do like Ida Nielsen's solo albums.

Not really MPLS sounding (he's doing his own thing), but I enjoyed Moses Sumney's most recent album Græ - I've never heard anything quite like it. This is probably the most radio friendly track on it, but the strangness and breadth of his music reminds me a little of Prince.

Even more of a stretch, but the other artist I'm listening to a lot is Zebra Katz. Less Is Moor was probably my favourite album of 2020 (I just like to take every opportunity to sing his praises biggrin ).
