Dionne Warwick

Although late 1960s Black pop was dominated by wailers like Queen Aretha and twisted sista Tina Turner, I was a bigger fan of the more reserved songs by The 5th Dimension, featuring the aural wonderfulness of Marilyn McCoo, and Dionne Warwick. Though their vocals were lighter by comparison, I’d argue against anyone who denies their soulfulness. In reality, soul music isn’t just about how high your singing can soar, but the way your voice makes people feel. https://oldster.substack....-of-dionne

Great article! I follow the author on twitter, and love his insight on most things as well as learn from him about fiction books. This new article is another great addition. I can’t wait till her documentary releases.

I could never get into Dionne's 60's material no matter how hard I tried.

Dionne is one of the greatest vocalists ever.I remember in the early 70s,my mother had one of her albums. It features a lovely remake of the Beatles' "Yesterday".Her entire 1979 'Dionne' album is another favorite. She had great songs in the 60s,70s and 80s...over three decades! Back then, artists had real careers that lasted a long time. These days, you don't really see that as much.

I dig her Arista stuff. Arista were often soft or "adult contemporary", but was a good fit for her.

"Heartbreaker" is a heartmelter. What a tune.

It is, but I recently discovered an oldies channel on tv and saw Dionne doing I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself and I just didn't like that wall of sound at all. I much prefer the version by Isaac Hayes. Much slower, more relaxed, more soulful. But still, yes, Bacharach & Davis were a great songwriting team, no argument there.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

That's definitely a good one. Not only a lovely pop classic, but one of the great Quiet Storm slow jams of the ages cool

Finally wiped it off and put it on the turntable... Was hesitant because it looks like it has a lot of scratches and marks...but so far it sounds terrific. Of course, I have to give credit to my stellar 40 year old Technics SL-23 turntable for that! wink

.

Omigosh, I forgot that Deja Vue was my love jam with my partner at the time... Thanks for bringing the memories back! A great album indeed! music

Well, the second side is really scratched--still a great album. And I have no idea why this is in bold. razz lol
