When it came out I didn't see what folks saw in Fallin, Keys herself. Then You Don't Know came out n I was like "OK I get it". Beautiful song, love it love. She has a few other nice 1s, but I'd say it's my fave smile.
For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I was a fan when she first came out. Now, I can't stand her.

I've said it before here, that she has this arrogance about her. This thing where she's in on a bigger joke that no one else will ever get. She did it when they inducted Prince into the RNRHOF I think. She's done it other times. She'll stop mid-sentence, and sorta snort to herself like someone whispered a dirty word in her ear for the first time. It's very off-putting.

I mean, she's had big songs, and good on her. I hope she's happy and living her best life. I don't know her name anymore. Don't know a thing about her. I don't know which was the better single.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Same here, that whole fake wannebe Hip-Hop poser act she always puts on is annoying as hell and I honestly think she can't sing with that nasal whiny voice, she's just annoying.

She had a lot of potential when she started out with her Gladys impersonation schtick. I remember my friend in high school was obsessed with Fallin'.

Me too. Thought Fallin was overrated. But liked her subsequent singles.

Yeah, I think "Fallin'" had so much attention just because of new-artist fanfare. Oh, new girl on the block! But then when the hype settled, it felt like, "wait, was it really that good?" Answer: nope.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

You mean Gladys or Roberta Flack? I know there were comparisons too Roberta Flack
because they both wrote and produced their stuff and Alicia said it would be a
dream to work with her. In between all that you had Teena Marie and Patrice Rushen too. I'm like the rest of you guys. Fallin nor really much of her first album did absolutely nothing for me but damn she came up with a masterpiece in Diary Of Alicia Keys. After that she started falling off. She had some decent singles afterwards but never another good album.

I was into her first two CDs, but the quality fell off after that.

Plus, her "neo-soul princess" act gets on your nerves.

"You don't know my name" by a milestone, "Fallin'" was industry dreck IMO. Not a huge fan of Alicia but she's had some enjoyable songs throughout her career. I liked the song she did with Khalid last year, "So Done".

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I like Alicia and her music from the beginning until now. I like the direction she's gone in with her music and her life. There are so many skanky artists out there but she carries herself with class. I have all her albums and although some are better than others, I enjoy all of them.

I've been thinking 'bout Alicia Keys
I couldn't help from crying
But she was born in Hell's Kitchen
I was living down the line
I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be
I've been looking for her even clear through Tennessee

I always feel that het music is a little too polished, too perfect, I miss the raw edges, but then again, if Bob Dylan writes a song about you, then you must have been doing something right. And to answer the question, You Don't Know My Name is good. I like this idea of being silently in love with someone.

My favorite was her first album but I do agree with your sentiment. I did not follow her much other than her singles until the last few years but she doesn't come across to me as arrogant now. Perhaps I would feel different if I saw her as a fake, but I get a sense she is more grounded than most stars in a Buddhist type of way. There are plenty of non-celebrities like that, so I don't see it as a star thing.

In regards to the OP, Fallin'definitely caught my attention that someone new to the music scene had arrived. So, it has special appeal to me.

"Fallin'" is such a definitive 2000s song, but radio and talent shows ran it into the ground. I am still charmed by the Main Ingredient arrangement of "You Don't Know My Name".

Basically cringe when I heard "Empire State Of Mind" now.

Well, if there was anyone to recognize what a racist looks like, and what spreading hate and division is about - it's you.

Alicia Keys isn't racist. Racism is a system built by white people to keep non-white people in a submissive, subjugated state financially, socially, mentally, and otherwise. After all, it wasn't Black folks hanging white people from trees, putting them in tires and setting them on fire, dragging them behind trucks until they were dead, or sic'ing dogs on them to eat them alive.

Her singing the black national anthem isn't racist. But it tickles me when it triggers snowflake white people into saying, like Bill Maher, that "we only need one anthem." Well, when Black people are welcomed and treated fully equally in the United States, they probably don't feel much a part of this country.

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" has been around for decades, snowflake. The white people national anthem isn't sufficient for every person in the United States. The song is inherently racist and was made for white folks. It's also a horrible tune in general (an old pub tune). And no, I ain't standing up for it. I'ma sit my ass right down.

But let's look at the third verse of the national anthem:

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

So if Black folks continue to sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing," so be it. Melba Moore did this song with a slew of talent in 1990, and I remember loving the song (it was the first I'd heard of it, at 22 years old) and bought the cassingle.

White people get so up in their feelings over stuff that, frankly, ain't got shit to do with them. But that's what white supremacy does - it says, "Hey, that's not about you, but it should be. So say something. You can't let them ni**ers get one up on you. Not even with a song. Put them in their place!" Sit your ass down and be quiet for once.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
