Girl Bye!: How The Drama of Girl Groups Allures Us and Fuels Their Art.

What made me think of this was BET's The Encore, a reality show that cobbled together the broken pieces of R&B girl group glory of the past.

There's troublesome Keily Williams of 3LW.

Bickering antagonizers Felisha and Fallon King of Cherish.

Game for anything Shakari DeVoe from Blaque.

God fearing Pam Long from Total.

Drama queen Aubrey O'Day from Danity Kane.

Cheerful Nivea.

And bringing up the rear the members who've seen better days sisters Meesha and Irish from 702.

There was so much ego. So much weight thrown around.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSEBHqzFcG-X4f9pld75f1b0_zHJ9QWL2sbq6grQ8cCWFE9yzjl1wjWbjv-CQntKt5VMtc&usqp=CAU

Lazy members who couldn't take direction and sassy harpies who didn't know how to give it.

It made one wonder if their goal of writing, recording and producing a six song EP in 30 days would ever be reached (let's forget the fact that this is a crazy goal to begin with).

But lo-and-behold, they did accomplish the goal and not only that, it's a solid effort from the ladies.

Which got me to thinking about how girl groups always fall apart badly. And drama always rears it's ugly head no matter how much the PR team tries to put up fronts of girl power and fabulousness.

Even after the groups break up the drama follows them. Just look at Camila Cabello and Normani from Fifth Harmony. Camila is flailing after initial success and rumors of colorism and bad management dog Normani to this day after rumors of racism, bad management and bickering plagued the group while they were together.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTIRX95owkTg3mDpDXMBv_kDr9Iopwizmz7W1yOJtQEV5fuKWCKQ0ZbKtgMQ7C8fD-k8NA&usqp=CAUimages?q=tbn:ANd9GcRs40s9fqCxp6KKu2Jogf3WtYIvAY-J8Jg6FoBD9oc00NFFgxe650t_wZAZkSKnpzvD1J8&usqp=CAU

So my question is what are the biggest dramas you remember from your favorite girl groups?

Is it no secret that drama makes good art?

Van Halen & Pink Floyd must be girl groups then.

Van Halen didnt splinter into all these little solo projects where almost none were relevant though. I mean DLR Was really the only one that had some hits or really cut solo records. Sammy Hagar was a big selling artist before Van Halen, with Van Halen, and after Van Halen. Also none of these things finished the band, Eddies health ended the band, Pink Floyd have new stuff coming out from what I have heard, where is the new Destinys Child 702 Allure Fifth Harmony, all these girl groups were done when a member left or just about done.

Girl Groups are doomed to fail from the get go. Mainly because WOMEN have extra things that the media and all focus on, their looks and appearances that always singles members out and basically ends them before anything else. ALSO the looks thing, plays a factor because its rare that we see them "age" as groups thats very rare, and when I say age I dont mean from 19 to 25 I mean from 20's into their 40's. Our views on them especially now, wont allow that, with Social Media it would be non stop shit talk about looks all day long and never about music. Also on occasion you have "manufactured groups" Like Fifth Harmony or PCD or the Saturdays, and so many others that are not girls that ever knew each other, they just stood in the same line. I mean Fifth Harmony was pulled apart because each girl got a publicist, Pussycat Dolls came apart because one member did all the singing and the writing pretty much, though they did regroup COVID shut it down and that new album has been shelved. And the BRIT bands like The Saturdays, also met on a show etc...and once you get big which usually is first single they want to see how quick they can break the girls up, so each member has a camp and click and thats the end right there.

I agree looks always are forefront. I think V6, MJGirls, and the Spice Girls (maybe others I'm not thinking about now) capitalized on that the best by pushing the focus on preferred style over individual looks.

Don't you feel like The Spice Girls segmented themselves even more by having such distinct images?

lol

I do agree with Last December post though on how manufactured girl groups are
put together and how quickly they have beef with each other or dissolve.

I think when you hear about the friction and drama in musical groups, its always more associated with female groups more than male groups but occurs with both. I would imagine it being hard to be part of a group bc everyone wants to be the Star. It can be uncomfortable unless everyone has the understanding up front about who will be the focal point of the group. And even that may not be guaranteed.

I call it The Adam Levine effect, and I always thought Maroon 5 were one of the smartest bands for that reason.

They all seemed to agree to let Adam bring all that publicity back to the group. He only had that one solo project with Christina Aguilera but never tried to go solo.

All bands should take notes.

Facts. They have a leader and are just fine being that. Not looking for other opprotunities and going solo. Some people let their ego get the best of them, but when you have a good leader, let them do their job.

yeah especially if it's a manufactured group like a Fifth Harmony, Spice Girls, etc.... because whomever manufactured it is already looking down the line, I mean I don't care how much these ladies say they get along, they are not going to have any form of longevity, I mean can we name a girl group that started young and is now old and still releasing new music and never disbanded? Once each member has a "team" it's over. And again it's always on the girl groups, look at New Kids on the Block, they broke came back tour release albums etc....does the media harp on how they look now in late 40's and early 50's? Can you imagine if that was a gir group every comment would be on looks.

The Go-Go's are still around. They have a new Broadway musical and a recent documentary. The Clark Sisters put out an album in 2020. Salt N Pepa still perform, but they fired Spinderella around a year ago.

Klymaxx actually still tour. You just have 3 different versions.
The fake one led by the drama stirrer Cheryl Cooley.
You have a version led by Joyce Fenderella Irby called Klymaxx FM mafia
and one led by Bernadette Cooper.
Joyce was playing with Bernadette for awhile but Bernadette likes to be
out front. She was the drummer and the Cool spoken voice for the band. She just has that personality that won't allow her to stay in the background long.

Coco from SWV has an ego the size of the Titanic. I think the girls just let her have that and go on about their business.

XScape just grew up and got over their issues.

I don't recall any issues with Expose.

Klymaxx is another group that could've benefitted from the Adam Levine affect.

Bernadette is the obvious member that brings attention and identity to the group.

I'm sure they would've lasted much longer had they followed her lead.
