There's no True Survivor by David Hasselhoff, Mornin' by Al Jarreau, or Thriller or anything by Genesis, OutKast, & Busta Rhymes on this list. So it's not really valid.

Opinions but Rolling Stone seems to be going through a midlife crisis. Trying to maintain their hipster cred while trying to appear young and hip.

If that is what they're going for, then they would have put White & Nerdy, Word Crimes, or even the song Weird Al did on Epic Rap Battles instead of Eat It. lol

Like I said, trying lol

They don't always go with the newer stuff but when they do it comes off as pandering and forced, like here. I can't take this list seriously when they got "This is America" in the Top 5.

Tori Amos, Beck, Bjork and Madonna have consistently put out better.

Say that shit!

I love Bey and all, but "Nothing Really Matters" is better than "Formation" when it comes to videos. No, it doesn't speak to police brutality and the things B was addressing, but if we're talking visuals, etc., then Madonna gets it there. "Rain," "Express Yourself," "Like A Prayer," and Janet's "Made For Now" (both versions) beat "Formation," as a video.

They could've even said "Single Ladies" and I would've had less to argue with.

"Single Ladies" ain't even anything special as video. I never understood the fascination over it.

Even though image (and especially video) seems to be more important than the music at this point neutral MTV celebrated 40 years since its initial broadcast, and I think the greatest videos still belong to that golden age of television, not the Internet.

I think because it has the unique characteristic of melding both simplicity and audacity.

Plus the Bob Fosse twist.

You can't miss with Bob Fosse.

People have been accusing Rolling Stone of this since about 1985.

And they've been right as well.

Just looked through the list, honestly it's pretty good. MJ and Madonna fans wouldn't be satisified unless at least 10 videos were by their fav. As a prince fan I say it's a pity 1999 isn't there, basic video but it's also pretty definitive to me. Whatever.

I had one test: "Is Just by Radiohead in there?" the answer is yes, the list is fine.

No Hey Ya or Call Your Girlfriend though? That's surprising.

It actually is a pretty good list. They've got Prince's best video. I wasn't sure they'd have any of his. A couple vids got a woke bump, but can't say they're undeserving.

a list of the 100 greatest music videos and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video is not included? hmmm what a dumb list.

I agree if Thriller isn't #1 or placed highly then is it a list?

If Billie Jean and Beat It aren't placed highly it's suspect.

If Take on Me or my personal fave Nothing Compared 2 U aren't high on the list...

Billie Jean is #10. For a list of 100, that ain't bad. Speaking of "Bad"... lurking pc

Fucking parody Eat it is on it, but no Beat it??!! Who the hell are they kidding? Nevermind not putting Thriller on the list, but have a bunch of other crap videos there.

I don't even think Kiss is a good video. His worst look with too much mascara. He danced unbelievable during that tour, but it doesn't show in the video.
He looks clunky with the choreography together with the girl. Like a one take filming session.

1999 is my video of choice. Has all the elements that made Prince the public figure, and that trenchcoat is still mesmerizing. Raspberry Beret could've been cool but the green screen is way to apparent.

Billie Jean is a good video but has some major flaws. To much new technology cuts and effects, looks dated as f*CK. Michael's attire is ridiculously ugly. A pink shirt under a black leather jacket, and a red bowtie to top it off. But most people will just look at the lighting effect on the floor. No way you can put it above Thriller, come on now! Bad is just Bad.

But Janet Jackson? Excuse me?!?!! When I Think of You!!!!! Rhythm Nation!!!!!

yeah,I never understood why "Kiss" is often mentioned as one of his best videos. It's very basic and the dance moves are not that great. He's got much more exciting videos than this one.

Same with WDC. Huge potential from that opening Bath Tub. But then we as a viewer looks at Prince who looks out on a lake and movie clips from PR. Disappointment. Even his and The Revolution's attire is way over the top. And the dancing is lame. But I get it, crossing over to a wider audience ala' 1984-1985 fashion.

Personally I like Smooth Criminal & Remember The Time the best. Say Say Say too. But Thriller is the most well known and one of the 1st long form videos. There's lots of people who do that like the people in the Phillipines jail and in the Ferris Bueller movie.

Considering Michael Jackson is still persona non grata in the mainstream music press the fact that they couldn't get rid of him completely on this list says a lot.

Which bit? The idea that MJ should be included more than once or the idea that mainstream music journalism doesn't want anything to do with him right now?
