It probably would have looked strange to hear Aretha's voice coming out of Jennifer. You don't hire Jennifer to not sing.

Right. That would have been weird. Jen is a singer first, an actress second. No need for her to lipsync Aretha. Sister Ree had this all planned out. She knew what she was doing. Jennifer didnt do a screen test for this role. Has anyone seen the film yet? How much of Aretha's career does it cover? Unless I misunderstood, I thought I read where the film basically wraps up with the recording of Amazing Grace? eek

I had planned to see it today (Sunday) but got too busy and didn't get to go.From the reviews that I read, the film begins in the 50s (Aretha's teen years) and concludes in 1972 during the 'Amazing Grace' sessions.

It's always interesting to me...how the filmmakers decide where to end a biopic hmmm there was so much they could have covered.By ending it in 1972,this means that so many other great songs are not included (1974's "Until You Come Back To Me",for example).

Not covering the Marcus Miller/Luther Vandross early 80s period up thru “Freeway of Love” is criminal. Of course it is not the definitive/high point of her career by any means but it was extremely interesting and that work holds up like a motherfucker today. It is akin to neglecting “Living in America” while dealing with James.

Whats Love Got To Do With It

*****

A classic biopic that made me really appreciate Tina and her life story, not knowing anything about her at all...now I own several albums and the new book.

Jacksons: An American Dream

*****

Another really great tv special with good performances (Angela at it again as Katherine). Along with Michael Jacksons autobiography "Moonwalk" it flows well together with the story of his rise to stardom and shares many stories about growing up with his family.

Bohemian Rapsody

****

A great biopic and very well done live performances by all. I didnt know much about Queen honestly and I leared a lot about Freddie's life and the bands as well.

Straight Outta Compton
****
Another well done film with some good performances by all, especially O'Shea Jackson playing his father Ice Cube. I knew a lot about the band and they followed their timeline very well. Could have been a mini-series

Aretha: Genius / Respect
****/****
Both Genius Aretha and Respect paid much honor to Franklin's legacy and life story, unflinching from the hard upbringings and diva antics. The only difference here is Genius told a complete 8 episode story of her life up to her amazing Grammy performance in 1998. Respect is for the casual fan, and story ends at Amazing Grace respectfully, and some of the performances from Hudson, Whittaker and Blige are something to be seen.

Beyond The Sea
***
A decent life story about Bobby Darin and his short lived rise to fame and battle with music execs over the right to make the music he wanted to make and civil rights changing the tide in America. It made me appreciate him a little more.

Honestly I have not seen a lot of bad bipoics other than these Lifetime films:

Innocence Lost - Madonna

0 stars
Why on earth would anyone do a life story on someone and dont have the music? Terrible acting and storyline painting Madonna as the town's floozy to get to the top.

Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B
0 stars
Another biopic without music and bad acting. Wendy Williams did a great job with her own biopic honestly so maybe she learened her lesson with telling someone elses.

Whitney
0 stars

Britney Ever After

They are interesting from the standpoint of turning people on to an artist they are unfamiliar with. If it leads to people digging into the artists work and making new fans, I'm all for it.

I get why actual fans of an artist may have problems with some of them but that's neither here nor there. They are not documentaries, they're entertainment made to make money.

The best was Bohemian Rhapsody. I swear there were times I thought I was actually looking at Freddie Mercury. The worst? It's a tie between Miles Ahead or that god awful Man In the Mirror!
