If you want to learn more about an artist or get deep, you need straight documentaries

Actually, you would get a book. There's been over a thousand books on The Beatles since the 1960s. Even ones about Stuart Sutcliffe & Mona Best (Pete's mother) & The Quarrymen. A documentary is not that likely to say much about Mona Best, if at all. razz The Genesis book Chapter And Verse (written by the band memebers and people who worked with them like Chester Thompson) has way more information in it than any of their documentaries.

But in terms of things that someone watching a documentary wants to know about. The QUEEN Biopic actual events were changed for drama purposes, Freddie Mercury did not know his aids diagnosis at LIVE AID that is not true the band also said that it was done for the purpose of the ending and to elevate that performance more. A beatles documentary not mentioning Pete Best's mother what Beatle fan is calling for that? I mean is documented quite heavily in Beatles Documentaries always. I mean the upcoming Beatles Get Back is going to be what fans have always wanted, a real capturing of that recording and process. THE Let it Be film was always DARK and focused only on fights for the drama of the sell, basically you could say that film was the basis for reality TV which highlights and cuts together the fights and drama and leaves out all else. The Trailer for GET BACK shows the Beatles actually LIKING being together what a concept as opposed to making it seem they hated each other everyday on that album, honestly if they did hate each other that much, ABBEY ROAD never would have been a recording.

Well she is important to the Beatles early days. Anyway a documentary or a book is not necessarily more accurate than a biopic. There's always the Albert Goldman & Martin Bashir types. razz There's also the type of documentaries that just has people saying how great something is and little about the actual subject. They might have people speaking who had nothing to do with whatever it it. Or the Behind The Music/Unsung style that is usually about gossip like the artists getting on drugs, getting arrested, or group members fueding with each other. A celebrity might write an autobiography that mainly mention the good things that happen.

I've grown weary of music biopics over the years. The only one I saw and liked enough to buy on disc to watch again is Control about Joy Division's Ian Curtis.

I also have the Serge Gainsbourg film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life on disc, but that was a blind buy and while quirky, it has many of the faults I find with almost all of these type of movies.

An upcoming one I'm actually interested in seeing is the Heart biopic only because it will be written and directed by Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein.

I plan on seeing it today. Although Im not overly excited. I already know a lot of her story and other than the early Columbia years, Im familiar with most of her music so I dont think there will be anything new here for me like there was in the Tina Turner movie. Really Im just going to hear JHud sang. 😁

I saw a clip of the Aretha movie and it was a big disappointment to hear JHud singing instead of Aretha. She just doesn't have Aretha's voice. If they had used Aretha's original vocals, then I might have gone to see it.

It probably would have looked strange to hear Aretha's voice coming out of Jennifer. You don't hire Jennifer to not sing.

I dislike most that I've seen. They tend to be incredibly formulaic, with simplistic notions of how art gets made (fight with your girlfriend / turn it into your biggest hit). I also find it such an insult that they call the movie "Aretha" or "Ray", and the movie includes no vocals by either Aretha or Ray. So is this about the musician, or is this about the actor wanting an Oscar?

The entire point of Aretha is the voice. It doesn't matter if someone else CAN sing the songs, they don't have that voice.

I guess my favorite is What's Love Got To Do With It. As far as I know, it had Tina's real vocals, and wasn't the same old formula. It was more like a horror movie, and that moment when she finally hit back in the limo was cathartic and great.

According to IMDb, Jamie Foxx didn't sing in the movie Ray. That was all Ray Charles.

Right. That would have been weird. Jen is a singer first, an actress second. No need for her to lipsync Aretha. Sister Ree had this all planned out. She knew what she was doing. Jennifer didnt do a screen test for this role. Has anyone seen the film yet? How much of Aretha's career does it cover? Unless I misunderstood, I thought I read where the film basically wraps up with the recording of Amazing Grace?

I had planned to see it today (Sunday) but got too busy and didn't get to go.From the reviews that I read, the film begins in the 50s (Aretha's teen years) and concludes in 1972 during the 'Amazing Grace' sessions.

It's always interesting to me...how the filmmakers decide where to end a biopic hmmm there was so much they could have covered.By ending it in 1972,this means that so many other great songs are not included (1974's "Until You Come Back To Me",for example).

Oh well. I think I will skip it until it shows up on streaming, which will probably be next month. It didnt do well at the box office over the weekend, which is not surprising. Nothing much about her life to make folks flock to see it on the big screen. I think it would have been better suited for the small screen. Also I think the mini series on NG kind of took away from the momentum of the movie. Im just sorry I cancelled my cable before I could watch all the episodes, which covered the late 70s and 80. I am more interested in those time periods of her career that are always either glossed over or ignored elsewhere.

Well, my favorite Prince era was when he had red bikinis and black knee high boots as his main outfit, and he does look gay as hell and fabulous. So, what's the problem with looking gay?

Documentaries that are properly done, many times are done by the artists of if it a deceased artist than a close member of family or countless people in their camp. BIOPICS are Hollywood focusing on the gossip and also factually incorrect many times, the Elton John and queen one are two that are off in many areas. The behind the music shows are edited to be dramatic, like reality shows always make people fight, it's a routine, but the behind the music normally are factually correct just edited to make them seem more dramatic, just watch the one done on the band STYX to this day it is always pointed out how much they just focused on the realty show like narrative. But documentation's of artists especially recent stuff, like on Tina Turner, The Bee Gees, Michael Hutchence, Harry Chapin, this stuff is stellar. There is actually going to be a biopic in a year or so on The Bee Gees which I am sure will focus on the fights and I am sure it will change things around to make moments link together similar to what the Bohmeian Rhapsody movie did. A prince biopic would be dreadful, I don't care who is playing him or who writes the script it's going to be nauseating, just thinking of certain tributes done for him and people dressing up in the wardrobe, already made me hate the idea.

I like them.

La Bamba
The Buddy Holly Story
The Doors
Ray
Walk The Line

Rocketman

Bohemian Rhapsody

Etc, etc. those are examples of good ones.

I have not seen the Andre 3000 Jimi Hendrix movie, as I read that the family did not allow for Jimi's music to be used in the movie?

La Bamba has always been my favorite biopic. Love the cast! A more recent biopic or I should call it a docudrama I saw on Hulu was Madonna and The Breakfast Club. I enjoyed it but it wasn't what I call high quality. It mixes interviews with Madonna's band mates with reenactment dramatization's of her pre-fame life and from what a read the actual real life locations were used. The actress looked surprisingly like Madonna. There was also tape recordings used of Madonna made by her then boyfriend Dan Gilroy.

All it took was one look at Esai Morales in that movie and I went hog wild! I wish they had given him some full frontal nudity scenes in that movie. evillol

I never saw ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ but so many people have told me that it is excellent.

I loved it and the actor that played Freddie, when it got to the 1980s, and he had cut his hair and had a masculine look, had me dripping and panting like Scooby Doo. That's another movie that needed some full frontal nudity in it. evillol

.

My only complaint was the timeline was messed up. In one scene, Freddie is throwing a wild party with Rick James' "Super Freak" playing and in the next scene, Freddie is late to rehearsal while Brian May is coming up with the stomps and claps to "We Will Rock You" and the scene after that, they are just coming up with "Another One Bites The Dust". The little kiddies may not know the difference but I'm an old whore who not only lived through those eras but also has the records in my collection. Now, unless Freddie Mercury was personal friends with Rick James and had an early unreleased copy of "Super Freak" on tape, I recall that song coming out after all the others in the scenes that followed it. lol

That's top of the line for me. Others would be the Ray Charles movie with Jamie Fox (Ray actually picked Jamie), and Walk The Line about Johny Cash. Probably more but those come to mind. I really liked that in "What's Love Got To Do With It" that Tina Turner's vocals were there and that they switched to her actually performing at the end of the film. Top of the line for bio films.
