Grease VS Saturday Night Fever (Sound Track)

Which sound track (not the movie, there's a thread for that in the general dissussion forum) do you like better?

Grease. And just as is the case when I compare the movies, I am biased. Although I genuinely do prefer Grease (soundtrack & movie) to Saturday Night Fever. Grease is, to me, the second best musical ever made.

A lot of the disco songs on sides 2 and 4 of Saturday Night Fever go in one ear and out the other for me. Even though I've played the soundtrack many times, I can't recall right now what many of those songs sound like.

Grease on the other hand I find much more consistently enjoyable when the songs are played in the order in which they appeared in the film instead of the front-loaded original tracklisting.

So I vote for Grease.

the Grease soundtrack is alot of fun and I remember getting it for my Birthday back then.I was thrilled biggrin

but,as I mentioned on the other thread,I'm a disco fanatic.I think the disco era was so exciting. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack has it all: excellent tunes by The Bee Gees, plus a whole lot of great tracks from others (Kool & The Gang's "Open Sesame",KC & The Sunshine Band's "Boogie Shoes",Walter Murphy's "A Fifth Of Beethoven").....and even a couple of hypnotic instrumentals ("Manhattan Skyline" by David Shire,"K-Jee" by MFSB).....and honestly, isn't "How Deep Is Your Love" the absolute greatest song ever? biggrin music

fun fact: as you may know,Barry Gibb wrote and produced the Grease theme (title) song, which is sung by Frankie Valli. But the producers and director hated it when they first heard it.They thought the lyrics are too serious for a fun teen musical. They also thought it sounds too “disco-y” for a movie that takes place in 1959.

but, they wisely went with it and the song became a massive hit.I think the song’s hook (“Grease is the word…the word is,the word is,the word is…”) is super catchy and fun.

Grease is the stronger soundtrack. SNF sounds like a Bee Gees & Friends album. Grease is a real soundtrack, not just background music.

My vote goes to Saturday Night Fever. I'll be honest, although you are not talking about the soundtrack; it's impossible for me to think of the movie without the music.

After Prince, the Bee Gees are my next favourite.

The ‘Grease’ soundtrack is a lot of fun but I have to be in a certain mood to sit and listen to it.I usually only want to hear it immediately after seeing the film, which I don’t watch too often anymore.

On the other hand,I listen to the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ soundtrack all the time.To me,this soundtrack truly stands on its own.I don’t have to sit and watch the movie to get excited about these songs.I consider it more than a movie soundtrack. It is the soundtrack to an entire era.

Let's talk about "Jive Talkin'" for a second....I always found it odd that the double vinyl LP had the live version of the song...and the double CD compilation had the studio version of the song...but the song was never featured in the film..(??!!).. confused

Jive Talkin was from the LP Main Course. I don't recall it being affiliated with SNF.

Yeah I remember the live version was on the soundtrack.Oddly enough, years later in the 80s,I purchased a SNF cassette and this one featured the regular studio version of the song.

and yes…this is the only song on the soundtrack that is not featured in the movie.I heard that a scene was filmed but it was left on the cutting room floor. Who knows?

Oops, obviously it's been too long since I listened to SNF. Jive Talkin was on both Main Course and SNF. Thanks for the refresher. 😀
