Sorry been away a bit so I'm late on this. Without reading through all the posts so far, it seems like people are answering the question as if pejman asked where hip hop came from. I thought the question was about "gangsta rap"? And if by gangsta rap, you mean rapping not only about the streets but glorifying street life. Melle Mel rapped about street life in "The Message" but didn't glorify it. Some early Boogie Down production stuff walked the line between just telling the story and glorifying the lifestyle. So an argument could be made for the Bronx. I can only speak on what I know, and I remember buying these underground Too Short tapes around 87 that was unlike shit we had ever heard. Dre was just shedding his sequined glove around this time. I know for a fact that Dre picked up the "street" theme from cats like Too Short in Oakland, when he was hooking up the whole NWA thing. So I would have to say it came from Oakland, although I could be wrong. It could have been the Bronx but it wasn't LA as most would think. Let me catch up on the other posts respond accordingly. pejman said: Well since inthe916 and MisterMaxx were out to breakfast, lunch and dinner I will conclude that Gangsta Rap did indeed originate in LA so I guess Persia was right on the money. In the 80's after Ice T served his time in the penitentuary system he made his debut in a break-dancing film and shortly afterwords created THE RHYME SYNDICATE flowing his crime ryhme skills and opening the door to whole new breed of hip hop rap music. Shortly after his career took off the west coast displayed other rappers who functioned under a gangsta rap style and persona such as Eazy E. NWA, and Too Short. Then this rap music style found it's way to the East Coast,NEW YORK to be exact to rappers like Tim Dog who's debut album was titled FUCK COMPTON and aimed at the remaining members of NWA after Cube left their camp. And lets not forget Rodney O and Joe Cooley who came back with their album FUCK NEW YORK. This may have been the first spark that ignited a lot of the tension between East Coast and West Coast hip hop/rap music from the start. I still wonder if NY does or doesn't consider Gangsta Rap as Hip Hop Rap Music...
[This message was edited Tue Apr 29 8:27:34 PDT 2003 by pejman] The first real gangsta rap record that Ice T released was "6 in the Morning" It was a b side that came out in late 86. Freaky Tales was released early in 87 but was actually out in 86. Todd (Too Short) was selling these tapes himself all around the bay. Ant Banks and a few other cats had an underground following in the East Bay with their raw shit but it wasn't called gangsta rap at the time. Ice T was hip to these cats as was Dre. I know for a FACT that Dre had Todd's tape in the spring of 86 and that he didn't start work on the NWA album until that summer. The first cut he had in the can for his new group (they weren't even named NWA yet was "Something To Dance To" This was included on NWA's first EP and sounds nothing like the rest of NWA's stuff. Now remember both Dre and Ice T were doing fast paced b boy type records (120 beats per min type shit) when they came out. It's pretty clear to me that Dre, Easy and Yella came up with NWA idea soon after hearing Todd and Ice T's shit. So it's Oakland with Ice T being the one taking it down to LA. But in truth it's a good question because so many would say LA right off the top of their heads without realizing those cats were influenced by others in different cites. But it's pretty fucked up to call maxxx and I out when it's a so-called joke Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance
