AprilMichelle was right. It did originate in New York around the Bronx and Harlem region. Where else do you think it would've originated, New Zeland? NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

The genre or artform known under the name "Hip Hop" began in New York City -- specifically THE SOUTH BRONX, but it could have allegiances elsewhere. Hip Hop has been around since the early 70s and it went under many different names. The "HIP HOP" genre started to become recognizable in the ethnic minority communities of New York City during the early 70s, but yes people have been rapping before the term was created so it could have taken place anywhere.
That's what I've researched, but if you have some other point of view, I'd be glad to read it. [This message was edited Mon Apr 28 14:40:58 PDT 2003 by JANFAN4L]

It started in my hometown of the Boogie Down Bronx. I know everyone would love for it to have come from their city, but the facts are the facts. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

co-sign Listen, pejman, the entire unified culture of DJ's, b-boys, MC's and grafitti art came together in the South Bronx in the 70s. There were influences and anticedent action in the lives of the pioneers that helped inspire HipHop (ie. Kool Herc being from Kingston Jamaica where deejays toasted over dub) but the entire creation's birthplace is definitely the boogie down, south south Bronx.

Are you looking for Jamaica as your answer, Pej??
Although hip hop originated with those from Jamaica it actually was formed once they (Kool Herc, D.J. Hollywood, and Afrika Bambaataa, to name a few) migrated to The Bronx... So in theory it is definitley the bronx! If this is not where you were going with this then I have not a clue what your answer is but you better have documentation to back it! He calls me "Holi" cuz he says everyday w/ me is like a Holiday...

Well since inthe916 and MisterMaxx were out to breakfast, lunch and dinner I will conclude that Gangsta Rap did indeed originate in LA so I guess Persia was right on the money. In the 80's after Ice T served his time in the penitentuary system he made his debut in a break-dancing film and shortly afterwords created THE RHYME SYNDICATE flowing his crime ryhme skills and opening the door to whole new breed of hip hop rap music. Shortly after his career took off the west coast displayed other rappers who functioned under a gangsta rap style and persona such as Eazy E. NWA, and Too Short. Then this rap music style found it's way to the East Coast,NEW YORK to be exact to rappers like Tim Dog who's debut album was titled FUCK COMPTON and aimed at the remaining members of NWA after Cube left their camp. And lets not forget Rodney O and Joe Cooley who came back with their album FUCK NEW YORK. This may have been the first spark that ignited a lot of the tension between East Coast and West Coast hip hop/rap music from the start. I still wonder if NY does or doesn't consider Gangsta Rap as Hip Hop Rap Music... [This message was edited Tue Apr 29 8:27:34 PDT 2003 by pejman] -------------------------------------------------
