Artists who never left their hometown...
We all know Prince never left Minneapolis. Yes he lived in Europe, California and Canada, but he always maintained a residence in Minnesota. I think that is why UPTOWN always has resonated with me. I also think it's why that 1978-1989 block of Prince career is so alive and electric still. . What other artist that you know of never left their home town/City or State? . . My 1st(outside of Prince) is John Cougar Mellencamp Small Town"I wrote that song in the laundry room of my old house," Mellencamp told American Songwriter magazine in 2004. "We had company, and I had to go write the song. And the people upstairs could hear me writing and they were all laughing when I came up. They said, 'You've got to be kidding.' What else can you say about it?" . Mellencamp lives five miles outside of Bloomington, Indiana, on the shores of Lake Monroe.

I don't know exactly where Kate Bush lives, but she never left England.
And Bob Marley always returned to Jamaica. But I'm not so sure it makes their songs more "touchable". On the other extreme, Bob Dylan left Minnesota when he was around 20 and he spent a large part of his life touring. I can relate to his songs as well. Maybe because this sense of being on the road, heading for another joint is something that appeals to me. ZZ Top
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Even though he’s lived a bit in LA, Bruce Springsteen currently lives about 5 miles from the town he was raised in #SOCIETYDEFINESU

England is not a town. Ray Davies still lives in Muswell Hill doesn't he? Now that's local. Human League still all live in Sheffield I think?

Just started listening to Billy Joel. Isn't he a true New Yorker? Wrote an album titled 52nd Street and had the star voice and music piece in a movie about New York (Oliver and Company) [Edited 7/13/21 9:22am]

I believe he still has a mansion out there #SOCIETYDEFINESU

What differentiates Long Island from New York? I guess Billy Joel went in and out from Manhattan on Transit that he made it his second home, or am I wrong?

P.E. is from Hempstead (flav is from Freeport) Long Island, which is very close to the border of New York City (Queens)...Billy Joel is from Hicksville Long Island which is about a half hour from New York City...Long Island is considered New York City suburbs and both Hempstead and Hicksville are in Nassau County which borders Queens, which is a borough in New York City...alot of people from Nassau County claim New York City as their hometown because its so close and tgey either work in the city or spend so much time in the city

As a native of New York CITY, I can tell you that we consider Long Island a completely different place. A different species practically 😂 Billy probably came into the City every now and then, like most people from Lon Guyland As for Public Enemy, I always thought of them as a Long Island rap group #SOCIETYDEFINESU
