charles mingus - the complete atlantic recordings this weekend i've been listening to the charles mingus complete atlantic recordings 6 cd set (disc 6 is an interview with Ahmet Ertegun, but i haven't gotten around to listen to it yet).
one of my favorite all time records is "mingus ah um" on columbia records. i feel that it is required listening, just absolute brilliance. i, also, had several other columbia records pieces and pithecanthropus erectus on atlantic, but this weekend i got the atlantic box. mingus' music is so intelligently composed and arranged. his music is not just merely a "blowing session", it has movements, that shift in texture and color, but continues to swing. it is both beautiful and furious. it incorporates so many styles of american music, but he blends them all seamlessly, he was a true genius. for anyone not familar with his stuff, i highly suggest checking something out. something tells me this thread will plummet down the page at lightening speed, but i hope at least few folks will see it. maybe i should start another madonna or michael jackson thread? . Also highly recommended: Mingus Plays Piano, Black Saint & The Lady Sinner and Tijuana Moods (which he described as the best album he'd ever made). Recommended reading: "Beneath the Underdog", his autobiography - opening line: "In other words I am three". Check out "Weird Nightmare" too. You have GREAT taste. I commend you. | |

--- my suggestion is start with - mingus ah um elvis costello does a killer vocal version of weird nightmare, he toured with the mingus big band in 1997. mingus' wife had him write lyrics to several mingus pieces. . Mingus Ah Um is indeed very very good. I listen to it a lot
at work or in my car. I've had "The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady" for a few years now and in the beginning I played it a lot but I don't any more. I don't know why, I just can't get into it anymore. A friend gave me a copy of "Let My Childern Hear Music" and that's probably my fav Mingus album. I like "The Cold Chill of Death" a lot, it's spooky soup. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps | |

yeah, the black saint and the lady sinner and let my children hear music are definitely cool, but i prefer mingus ah um and some of the stuff from this atlantic box set because they are smaller groups.
i've always preferred smaller groups in jazz more than big bands. most of this box set are sextette/septette stuff. this is not to take anything away from his or anyone elses big band stuff. it's just my personal preferrence. ------------------------------------------------
