I have to say, some of Shep's mixes are muddled and uninteresting. It was always hit n' miss with his stuff. Whereas Junior or the late-great Rauhofer really had a sound. You knew it was them and it was going to be great. But Shep just sorta schlepped into a song, sometimes adding little more than a new drum/rhythm track underneath. Not all the mixes were bad, but there weren't enough really good ones.

I've done a lot of club DJ mix CDs, and I've so rarely found a Shep mix I wanted to use.

But good on him for doing whatever he's doing.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

CoolMF

Back in the day, I liked his remix of George Michael's "Hard Day". His "Strange Relationship" remix was cool...

Shep & The Neptunes were better than Prince 1990 onward

I agree, I always wonder why Madonna continued to let him remix her stuff after his “True Blue” remix… he did go into to produce some classic remixes (Into The Groove, Express Yourself, Keep It Together, Fever) and “Vogue”, “Rescue Me” and the Erotica album are really well produced, but I’m not really fussed on the remixes he did for Prince apart from “Strange Relationship” which I think works well.

Honestly, I think it's hard to remix a Prince song. As Nelson George said, you get a Prince-production™, not just a produced song. Prince is such a genre unto himself that any outside remix hasn't always worked well.

"Hot Thing" is an exception. I don't readily recall his remix of "Glam Slam," nor "Strange Relationship."

Erotica is a good record, and has a raw edge to it, in vocals and production. It's also very layered and heavy - production wise - in parts. The mid section, "Waiting" (not a Shep production), "Thief of Hearts," "Words," feels overdone and boring. Yet the first half of the record, "Erotica" through "Bad Girl" is brilliant. It's an EP unto itself.

He's done so many Madonna mixes, it's hard to recall any of them off hand right now. Her certainly found bigger success with her than others, I would imagine.

I hate that Junior Vasquez and M parted ways. They had some great stuff together. I loved his Sound Factory and Luscioius mixes of "Secret."

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
