Showtime Announces New Rick James Doc

[via press release from Showtime]

Showtime Documentary Films today announced the new documentary feature Bitchin: The Sound and Fury of Rick James, directed by Emmy nominee Sacha Jenkins. Bitchin is an intimate yet propulsive look at Rick James, one of rock, funk and R&B's most legendary and often underappreciated figures.


Featuring rare footage of James' incredible live shows, never-before-seen home video, original interviews with legendary artists, collaborators and friends, and a treasure trove of recorded interviews with James (who died in 2004), the documentary presents a full picture of James' dramatic rise and fall, focusing in on the "Punk-Funk" music he left behind.

The film was screened this week as part of the Tribeca Film Festival's inaugural Juneteenth programming lineup, ahead of its Showtime premiere later this year.

I remember in the spring of 1978,going to the record store to purchase the “You and I” 45 single.The b-side was “Hollywood”.Interestingly,Rick’s album was released the same month that Prince’s debut album was released (April 1978).

Hopefully it goes into some finer details and confirms a few things. I highly doubt they would overlook this since they claim the doc touches on Rick's vices and how his association with P was so pivotal for the both of them.

I remember in 1982,Rick mentioned that he was planning a movie musical that would be based on his life and rise to fame.It was titled ‘Spice Of Life’.It would be interesting to hear more details of this project (are there any songs that were written for it? Was a script created for it?).It’s kinda sad that it never happened.

I remember the "Spice Of Life" film idea too. Rick wanted to kill off his character at the end of the film so there wouldn't be a sequel (lol). He also wanted to a biopic/musical version of "Alice In Wonderland" called "Alice In Ghettoland" starring Teena Marie.
