Triumph is a good mashup of destiny and off the wall, and I think mj said something like that too in the moonwalk book

Triumph always sounds like songs written to order to me, e.g. the busy-ness of the production on Lovely One and Walk Right Now make them slightly second rate compared to OTW songs. Still a great album though, underrated for sure.

MJ could have released Thriller under The Jackson name, it wouldn't have sold a shit. Can You Feel It video was way ahead of his time than Thriller video, but it didn't made any cultural or commercial impact.

I'd say Can You Feel It was ahead of its time for sure, mental song as well.

I remember deeply Bad, an 8 minutes version, OMG, listening to it I discovered tracks in the mix that were hidden, that was funky as hell, as funky as Prince could be. Always thought that Speed Demon and SOTT share some similarities. I would like a mash up! I read lately an engineer interview, the guy who brought the synclavier into the Bad sessions. MJ wanted all his albums in synclavier, Quincy and Swedien were angry. The engineer told that MJ, at night after official session recording, behind Quincy's back, reworked almost every song, himself, erasing Quincy's tracks to make it sound synclavier. Bad main riff was in fact a mix of 4 or 5 synths, like an org, a string, etc. That wasn't Quincy real instruments arrangement at all. When Quincy and Swedien discovered that, they threatened MJ to fire the engineer and give up on synclavier, or else they would quit. MJ refused, so they quit the production of the album, well before it was finished. Never heard of that story before. Songs like Leave Me Alone or Speed Demon for instance sounds completely Synclavier, with no output from Quincy. Interesting. I recall this supervisor I had and he made the statement Quincey Jones produced Thriller, Bad has Quincey's name on it but Michael is pretty much the Producer of Bad.

There s no song of that quality on Off The Wall and Thriller. It s Everybody that sounds like Get On The Floor. Both were written by MJ. Get On The Floor was a joyful song " It s good to dance and have fun", Everybody is more of a melancholic sound " I m bored of my life".

MJ recognized without problem the great work of Quincy Jones on Off The Wall. But for Thriller, MJ thought the 4 songs he wrote were pretty much the same without QJ input. He was also angry that, whereas MJ didn't do interviews at the time, and even hadn't a manager in these crazy years (!), QJ was doing interviews all the time about Thriller. When you listened to QJ, it was like it was his album, he did everything, etc. QJ seemed to "steal" The album from MJ. MJ questioned QJ judgment amd involvement a lot during the Thriller production. First QJ mocked MJ when he told him he wanted Thriller to sell 10 millions, the double of what OTW sold at the time. QJ told him he would be happy if it sold 1 or two millions (!) Due to the crisis market of LP. Then QJ tried to discourage MJ to record and release Billie Jean, then told him it was a shitty song that couldn't be a hit, and that he should replaced the track name by " Not My Lover" Instead. The worst and unexplainable was when during the infamous listening to the first mastering of the album at Epic Records, the album sounded completely shitty. They had to rework every tracks almost from scratch ( besides TGIM that was already released). I also heard Bruce Swedien implied that when recording Thriller, MJ tried to get rid of him, thinking he took too much place and influence in the creative process, and thought that he didn't need to pay someone just to adjust the mics in the room. So for Bad, he told QJ that he would have a producer credit. He kept Swedien and QJ mostly for superstition'sake and to have a good press. [Edited 6/2/21 1:55am]

I've always dug "Bad". "Dangerous" is still my favorite, though. But I usually listen to "Bad" in this way...as a 9 track album. Without "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" + "Just Good Friends".
The tracklist is this: Side 1 1. Bad 2. The Way You Make Me Feel 3. Speed Demon 4. Liberian Girl 5. Another Part Of Me (Extended) Side 2 6. Dirty Diana 7. Leave Me Alone 8. Smooth Criminal (Extended) 9. Man In The Mirror It's just Funkier this way to me. And "Man In The Mirror" screams ALBUM ENDER IMO. Ends up being around 46 minutes. Here's a link for that playlist: https://youtube.com/playl...CjUA0Fx3lO [Edited 6/2/21 16:11pm] Exiles of the Nation

Thanks for sharing this.
I knew Quincy left out a whole lot in his getting fired after BAD. These days he acts as if he just worked on BAD humbly and harmoniously............then all of a sudden he gets fired without notice from MJ. And makes it sound nowadays like MJ did this cause he suddenly thought "Quincy doesnt understand the market anymore".....after 2 blockbuster albums.
Quincy conveniently leaving out the part where he angrily demands the firing of two key members in the production of BAD or threatens to resign himself.
Quincy a rat meng.

He didn't get fired. Michael just chose to not hire him for the next project. As is any artist's right. Not sure why Quincy feels he's in his right to be upset over that.
