Sign o the times and Bad... ...first i got to say, sign made me a fan, was one of my first record by p in 91. Anyway, been listening to Mjs bad (record) just for fun und realised that it funks so hard...forgot how good that is. A masterpiece. those vocals, so much punch, so much soul..wow. Sign on the other way feels in so many cases so simple, straight ...hmm and in parts those lazy vocals... could have been better...

When he sings how bad he is, how really, really bad, I feel it.

Prince wasn‘t looking for perfection in the recording studio (ist is mentioned many times in Duane Tudahls book). He wanted to put a song to tape and move on. Michael Jackson/Quincy Jones on the other hand produced perfect studio recordings - and a lot of work went into that. Both are great records, as a Prince fan I like Sign a little better. See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

So Bad was the follow up to Thriller. The pressure on MJ to release a follow up that would match Thriller was next level.
Prince on the otherhand was on his 3rd release since Purple Rain. Also had unreleased projects...Camille, Dream Factory, Crystal Ball and Roadhouse Garden. Now take those 3 albums and compile 10 tracks with a bonus track and compare to Bad.
Example... 1. Housequake 2. Kiss 3. Raspberry Beret 4. Girls & Boys 5. Adore 6. SOTT 7. Mountains 8. U got the look 9. If i was your girlfriend 10. Sometimes it snows in April Bonus track - She's always in my hair.
Despite saying compare the 2, I don't understand why people like to compare these 2. Both talented, but very different artist.

I had the chance to listen to songs from Bad in a high quality with Brad Sundberg sessions, in a studio with costly sound system. I remember deeply Bad, an 8 minutes version, OMG, listening to it I discovered tracks in the mix that were hidden, that was funky as hell, as funky as Prince could be. Always thought that Speed Demon and SOTT share some similarities. I would like a mash up! I read lately an engineer interview, the guy who brought the synclavier into the Bad sessions. MJ wanted all his albums in synclavier, Quincy and Swedien were angry. The engineer told that MJ, at night after official session recording, behind Quincy's back, reworked almost every song, himself, erasing Quincy's tracks to make it sound synclavier. Bad main riff was in fact a mix of 4 or 5 synths, like an org, a string, etc. That wasn't Quincy real instruments arrangement at all. When Quincy and Swedien discovered that, they threatened MJ to fire the engineer and give up on synclavier, or else they would quit. MJ refused, so they quit the production of the album, well before it was finished. Never heard of that story before. Songs like Leave Me Alone or Speed Demon for instance sounds completely Synclavier, with no output from Quincy.

There is something not quite right with the "Bad" album to me, the sound is too plastic, and not funk at all. Much prefer "Thriller" and "Dangerous". We're here, might as well get into it.

Bad is a perfect album | |

Bad had good songs but it suffers from cold sterile digital production compared to warm and lush sounds of Thriller and Off The Wall.

"Bad" was just that....not on the same level as "Thriller" and "Off the Wall". And to me, OTW was Michael at his best.

I feel the same way.I do like "Another Part Of Me" and "Man In The Mirror",though.

No MJ album comes close to Sign. Get off the crack pipe. Sign is the best album ever. Best. No MJ album makes my top ten. Thriller would be in top twenty. Off The Wall in my top 50 Bad nah.
Now Dirty Diana, that's a bad motherfunker. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Now Dirty Diana, that's a bad motherfunker. I was in school at that time and in our class was a punkrocker who was a fan of The Doors and who hated Michael Jackson, but he liked Dirty Diana! If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Bad was slept on as a full-length album as oppossed to be being the sum of it's singles/videos. Start to finish, it's an impressive effort with amzaing production and vocals. I can do without "Bad" and "Just Good Friends" but the rest of the album is flawless in terms of how it flows and plays.

If we could only eliminate the crack pipe usage on this site...

Uhm. Yes. It is. | |

Nope. It's not. And who cares about your top ten?? Or twenty?? Or fifty?? It's merely your opinion... and they say opinions are like assholes...

Sign O' The Times isn't even Prince's best album His best album is '1999'.

Triumph is an OK album, but it doesn't come anywhere close to OTW.

Hey I think one should be allowed to have a difference of opinion, even if we agree to disagree on how the mj albums are ranked. I personally love all his albums but don’t expect everyone to agree with me even if I can’t imagine why

As long as some people don't realize that's it's all just biased opinion, but state it as fact, then no. It's not allowed.

I remember playing this two albums for months, i think they were also the only albums I had at the time.
BAD is a perfect popalbum, perfectly produced, you can hear the work a long time on tracks, listening to it always brings joy. But its also very nice for the ears, not much edge.
Sign is full of creativity. typical for Prince he problaby worked for a day on a song, but Sign is the emotional one for me. IIWYG made me a fan, i was blown away when i heard it. I think Prince was the only megastar in the 80's that could actually release songs like IIWYG, the ballad of dorothy parker or Slow love. Can you imagine Madonna or MJ releasing the ballad of dorothy in the 80's?
