Later, you recall a scary incident with Prince — who wrote your No. 1 hit "Nothing Compares 2 U" — in which you say he chased you at his L.A. home. Did you consider not performing the song after that?

No because the song wasn't his, it was mine. It's my song. It never crossed my mind before I met him, or after. I never heard him sing it before I recorded it. I didn't associate it with him at all.

Her version isn't as good as the family or prince's so no sinead it's not your song, it's prince's. But there is no doubt you borrowed it well.

Can't believe I let myself get trolled into commenting on this subject or that people are still acting like 4 year olds on the playground over a song. Sinead has a gorgeous voice, The Family did it great especially with the saxophone and I will always love Prince and Rosie's version the best but who cares.

He couldn't have been too mad that he got paid every time they played or sold a copy of the song he wrote.

Virtually no one had heard Nothing Compares 2 U before Sinead O'Connor did it. Her peformance is beautiful. I'm more a fan of Emperor's New Clothes or Mandinka, but NC2U is great too.

Having said that, I think that NC2U might have hindered her career more than helped it.

Prince only "reclaimed" the song later.

his version is ok, the family version is ok. she made the song into an absolute classic. it's one of the very few examples of someone taking a song he wrote and doing it better than he ever did, even live.
it somehow fit her vocals so very well.

Vocally I had never really liked her, heard the previous album with Mandika on it and I just wasn't into her and still am not, yes she elevated the song to amazing status but what bothers me is you were given the song by the label and no doubt that elevated you to a point where people took notice of you, anyone that feels Sinead would have been more relevant without the song, you are smoking, but she did a lot of bite the hand that feeds you, she never really hid the fact she didn't like him at all, calling him the devil etc....which OK then give back money you made and the fame you got, because regardless of what we think of the family version or prince or prince and Rosie or Paul Peterson solo, the thing wouldn't exist if not for him. I do own this album that had the song, but to be honest I have t listened to it or her version in probably almost thirty years, it always bored me.

It's definitely one of the best albums of the 90's.

But multiple views can be right.

The song was an afterthought for Prince.

Sinead connected with it and truly made it her own and a classic to boot.

Prince "reclaimed" it after the fact.

If Sinead is that offended by Prince then why doesn't she return all the profits she made from it?

And finally, all this is moot because if not for Prince we wouldn't be talking about this.

Sinead is a one-hit wonder.Take away "Nothing Compares 2 U" and her catalog would not amount to a hill of beans. She should at least show a little gratitude to the writer of her only big hit.

You have no idea what you're talking about in regards her music, but I do agree that she should have never covered it and got that famous, it did her no favors and led to people like you rowing in with your ignorant opinions.

Exactly this. It will never be her song, because prince freaking created it. Tonclaim otherwise is just stupid. He never had to reclaim anything as well. It was always his song. Her version is hers, but that's about it and she wouldn't even have that version if the song never existed in the first place

Take away that song and her career would've went in a different direction.

Who knows she might've recorded someone elses song and it could've been the smash hit.

Are you assuming she's not talented enough to have had a successful career, because I think some people's take is that the mega-wattage spotlight put on her after NC2U had an adverse affect on her, and hence, her career.

But as it stands yes it is her only major hit, though I do love "I Want Your Hands On Me".

Strange that The Cranberries came along just a few years later to take up the female Irish vocalist spot, and went on to have numerous hits.

We'll never know how Sinead's career might have gone if she more or less "played the game". But, good for her for doing it her way.

Prince himself would have also had a much better 1990's if he had also "played the game".

Oh dear I think you're hearing is going. Neither the Family nor P's version comes anywhere near Sinead's.

As for Sinead being a one hit wonder, you have to be joking she has one amazing back catalogue. Universal Mother is an amazing album, beginning to end.
