Chaka Khan's "What Cha Gonna Do For Me" Turns 40 Anniversary Retrospective

My second favorite album from Chaka right behind "Woman I Am". I remember when I was a kid going to MusicLand to buy the WCGDFM LP and having my aunt drive home at 100 mph so I could listen to it. lol

...those first 5 songs back to back is unparalleled greatness on a female R&B/Soul album...then a jazz break (As The Melody Lingers On), then Night Moods, Heed The Warning, and Father He Said back to back is more greatness...ive played this album as much as any Prince or Earth Wind & Fire album ive had...between her version of "We Can Work It Out" and EW&F's version of "Got To Get You Into My Life", The Beatles classics have never been remade so perfectly, so much so, that theyre better than The Beatles originals.

Exactly.It's a very diverse album.There's a Beatles remake,some solid R&B tracks,a few jazz numbers and even a fiery dance track ("Fate").Alot to enjoy here.Chaka's finest album.

While sewing, I listened to this twice today.

Well, 1.5 because the internet cut out my streaming for a bit, then I got distracted for a while because the motherfucking sun decided to finally show it's face halfway into May, so us bags of water and shit could get an outside temperature above 56ºF in springtime in goddamn upstate New York.

Then I went back, started over and listened. Such a strong record.

My favorite CK solo album, hands down. Not only was the musicianship impeccable but Khan's vocal performance is extraordinaire and brilliant. She nails the two remakes 'We Can Work It Out" and the album's lead smash "What'cha Gonna Do For Me." This album is beast mode from start to finish. What a memorable year 1981 was in R&B/Soul/Funk music.

They keyboards on "I Know You, I Live You" are what makes it. The live drums on it, and the pre-chorus that leads to the chorus just lettin' loose on the vocals and horns. A note to all: Larry Williams played sax and arranged horns on Chaka's record. He also played sax on the grieving widow™ Sheila's The Glamorous Life title track.
