Hollaback Girl is about...

Courtney Love?

I had no idea. I don't think I did. But I ran across a video on the YouTubes that mentioned a lot of songs written about Courtney Love (and her vagina, aka "Heart Shaped Box").

“Being famous is just like being in high school. But I’m not interested in being the cheerleader. I’m not interested in being Gwen Stefani. She’s the cheerleader and I’m out in the smoker’s shed.” - Courtney Love, Seventeen Magazine (2004)

“Ya know, someone one time called me a cheerleader, negatively, and I’ve never been a cheerleader. So I was, like, ‘OK, fuck you. You want me to be a cheerleader? Well, I will be one then. And I’ll rule the whole world, just you watch me.” - Gwen Stefani, NME (March 2005)

I heard that you were talking shit
And you didn't think that I would hear it
People hear you talking like that
Getting everybody fired up
So I'm ready to attack, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out
That's right, put your pom-poms down
Getting everybody fired up

"Hollaback Girl" was the second biggest song of 2005.

Other songs included:

“Bruise Violet” by Babes in Toyland

“I'll Stick Around” by Foo Fighters

“Starfuckers Inc” by Nine Inch Nails

“Heart Shaped Box” by Nirvana

“Professional Widow” by Tori Amos

Other songs are noted in the video, as well.

That shit is bananadancebananadancebananadance .

Mine did, too. Like - first, how is Love picking a fight with Gwen freakin' Stefani? Is No Doubt a threat to Hole or something? Love already had a reputation of vomiting half-truths or just being a drunk dumbass in public.

And then Gwen actually responds? Gwen accepts the challenge and bites back, bananas included. And fucking nails it.

And interesting note from Wikipedia about it's popularity (and simultaneous slap in Love's face):

  • "Hollaback Girl" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 82 on the issue dated April 2, 2005, and within six weeks of its release, it had reached the top of the chart, becoming Stefani's first and only US number one.
  • It ended the nine-week run of 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" featuring Olivia.
  • It maintained the number-one position for four consecutive weeks.
  • "Hollaback Girl" ranked second on the 2005 Hot 100 year-end chart.
  • It was kept from #1 by Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together".
  • "Hollaback Girl" held the record for most US radio airplays in one week, with 9,582 plays, and maintained this record for over a year.

In other news, Courtney Love has never had a #1 hit, or a top 10 hit on the US charts on her own. (remember, we're talking female solo artists, not the lead of a band in both cases here.)

Wow. hmmm I didn't know it was Gwen's only solo number one.
I had fun employing her acapella in a mashup http://prince.org/msg/8/172152

I remember this plus Hey Ya! (OutKast) & My Humps (Black Eyed Peas) constantly played on the radio.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
