In praise of Jody Watley's Friends

My favorite Jody Watley song has got to be Friends. It's really stuck with me over the years. Love the lyrics, kind of the opposite of the usual song about friends and was Jody one of the first to incorporate rappers into a pop song? Eric B. and Rakim are fire on this track! Plus love the scratches going on throughout the song. The video even has some voguing going on about a year before Madonna's hit Vogue. Here's two versions of the song. I like the album version best. I love Jody. I feel she's one of those underrated 80s artists.

It also has one of the few rap guest appearances that I actually like. Rakim is hip-hop royalty.

Definitely. Mariah Carey has overdone it with the guest rappers. Back in the late 80s/early 90s it was relatively a new thing.

I loved Cymone and Watley's work together. Kind of like Janet with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They just bring out the best in the artists.

great song, great artist...i bought all her albums back then....Still A Thrill and Don´t You Want Me are some of my favorite songs of her, and Some Kind Of Lover but Friends has a special place in my heart. and it´s a song where the rapper actually adds something nice to the song unlike many other guest rappers on RnB songs... Rakim´s lyrics and vocal delivery are a perfect match to this gem of a song. I also like Whodini´s song of the same name but Jody´s is more upbeat...

she made some amazing music with André Cymone.

Madonna either copied a lot from her or it was just coincidence but Jody did a lot of things first.

they both real sexxxy too back in the day.

Jody still hot tho.

Madonna kinda sexxxy too

I've dated outside of my race and I discovered that Good Pussy is Good Pussy and Good Booty is Good Booty regardless of ethnicity...I don't have a Fetish for only Big White Tits, Big White Butts or Phat White Pussy.(chancellor) smile wise man !
