You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Willie is one of the all time greats. It will be a sad day in music when we lose Willie, but I'm happy knowing he's still making great music and performing on a regular basis.

Fenwick, from the Org, recently texted me. He said he was digging into SOTT SDE, and had bought some little tin can 5-CD box set of some Willie albums. He was quarantined and had time to listen to things in full. He mentioned how much he really enjoyed Willie's music, not thinking he would otherwise. (He bought the set just cuz it was $20 or something.) He had no idea Willie had covered "She's Out Of My Life," or Bette's "WInd Beneath My Wings" (both of which, I believe, translate quite well to country songs).

I told him I've been a fan of Willie from afar, but I sorta ducked out of listening to him by the 80s. (The 1980s not Willie's 80s.) My friend Travis and I used to bicker over who sang "She's Out Of My Life" better. He was raised to fear pop music until he got in high school, so he didn't even know who MJ was, and I didn't care for Willie singing MJ's song at the time. We had to call a truce on that one. HA. I fully respect and appreciate his talent and his utter fortitude and stamina in the music business.

I think people dismiss him and his rickety guitar as some pot smoking has-been, but it's far from the case. He's one of the few legends still alive. He's still around for a reason - he's a musical hero.

Looking back, I realized how many Willie songs I really did enjoy throughout my childhood, in between listening to soul and R&B so much.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

He is indeed around for a reason and I agree that he is a musical hero and beautiful song writer. Check out his video for Alice in Hulaland. One of my favs!
