I hope within the next few decades we can reflect back on this era of music and call out the contrived hype and overestimation of some of these acts' star power and influence. Not say that they're bad necessarily and not acknowledge their talent but point out that their talent simply isn't as good as they've been marketed.

Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, especially the former are the front runners of this discussion.

The live version of Watermelon Sugar that opened the show was amazing. It's one of those songs that the first time I heard it, it immediatly made my playlist. Good to see it win some awards. Also it's good for me to see that as I get older, my tastes on new music still resonate with others and i am not stuck in the past. (as i see some here are)

lol. Young artists tend to be marginalized. Harry is good, time will tell where he takes his talent.

And a good song is a good song regardless of who performs it.

People in my cirlcle know me as a big music snob, so you should have heard the crap I got at the time when I said I thought "Toxic" by Britney Spears was good. lol. But critics and consumers agreed with me and it's been listed among the best tracks of the 2000's.

Oshawott

I only caught snippets of the show and was thoroughly unimpressed. I am surprised that the ratings for this year's show were so low, however. I mean they had BTS and Beyonce present as well as a ton of other relevant artists; you'd expect much higher ratings given the amount of big names present.

That said, I'm so sick of Taylor Swift. Her winning AOTY multiple times seems incredibly unfair, especially since her music is basic as heck. I'll never understand why she's called a gifted songwriter when many of her newer songs sound like they've been written by a team of Swedish songwriters. She isn't a particularly good singer either so her success has always boggled my mind.

I'm trying to be more open minded on current music myself event hough there's always been something I've enjoy in the present day even if my preference is primarily in decades before my time.

...but I do not see the sudden appeal with Harry Styles. His music is the same sterile, artificial "grown up" shovelware we've gotten from other teen idols in the past decade looking to show they've "matured". It's all so paint-by-numbers now. When this sort of gimmick is done, the music usually changes from childishly chipper to raunchy; when it's not raunchy, it's boring and flavorless. Harry may be the creative force behind his music but there's nothing special about it or him despite what I hear people claim. I may just be proving your point when I say this but George Michael, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie he is not and his own identity is basic judging it by its own merits.

Where it comes to new music, I admit get a little judgmental too. Pop music is the least of it. I get a chuckle with today’s rap and hip hop. Especially when I hear someone say how “hard” a track is, and to me it sounds so amateurish and like something out of Idiocracy in how bad and dumb a lot of is. WAP for example, and that’s a PHD intellectual hip hop track compared most of today’s hip hop. I take it a lot of it is meant to be funny, but the joke seems to be to make minorities look like idiots.

Exactly none of them got any exposure, except 2 live crew and they got it more to try and get things banned and censored. But the other acts all of them combined in their careers sold less and even less exposure than Prince's "NEWS" instrumental CD. Which in a way, I think its funny how all these women always winning awards, Beyonce and Taylor and others, but the Rap female exposure and ones that get heard, Nicki, Cardi and Meg and hmmmm interesting what they all have in common, their sex appeal and only their sex appeal.

They got some kind of exposure. That's how I know they exist. lol I saw their videos on BET and some were in magazines like Black Beat that I used to buy. I have Y?N-Vee's album and also BO$$, but she was more gangsta rap. The 7669 group were on Motown Records.

Back then there were a lot of videos on MTV & BET of acts and/or songs I never heard on the radio. Some of their videos were shown regularly.

Yes they had stuff out, I worked in Music Retail so we saw it all, but having a record out is by no means "exposure" neither is getting an article in a magazine or some play. I mean to put these artists along the exposure of a Cardi B? Cardi B has a million different endorsement deals (which is where the income comes from) those artists are not even near it. And tons of Videos were played then since that was the way but it did not lead to anything for those artists. I mean in the later 80's early 90's there were tons of Freestyle artists that came out of the NYC area, now you had the ones that had a few hits like The Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation and Seduction, Johnny O and Cynthia, and then you had the bottom tier like Laissez Faire, and Company B and others now they had CD's out and even mixes that hit club charts, but I would never lump them into the exposure and "know them" factor of the more well known ones from that era, like a Lisa Lisa and Expose who had gold and platnum records.

How popular someone is was not really the point. I was responding to a comment that back then there was Salt-N-Pepa & Queen Latifah, and now there's Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion. Like it's something new that didn't exist before now. Since you are talking about popularity, there was Lil' Kim & Foxy Brown in the 1990s. Nicki Minaj is basically a clone of Kim, even doing the same kind of poses in photos. Although a singer, Millie Jackson was doing it before all of them in the 1970s

Exactly. I remember seeing the name Y?NVee in the 90's and never heard a song they did.

I actually had to research Youtube to see what they were about. I didn't even know they did a cover of Rose Royce I'm Goin Down the same time Mary J Blige did and I'll admit their version sounds better than Mary J. There are commenters who stated the girls didn't get exposure like they should have especially when there were girl groups coming out every other day then. There were plenty of girl groups that have videos who may get their song sparingly played or not at all on the radio. That doesn't equate major exposure.

Just as you had girl groups like Jade, SWV, EnVogue, Xcape who got major exposure there were many who didn't like Vybe, For Real, Allure, Shades, Kut Klose(except one hit I Like), etc.

Yes remember them in fact went to the album release party (when they did those things back in the day) for SHADES, I remember really liking them and no one really knowing who the heck they were for the most part.

Just a nudge to get old folks set in their ways thinking nothing could be better than what they already know and not want to expand your horizons.

.

Here is the clip of Harry Styles opening the show.

As a music lover, if you do not think this is sublime, then there is nothing left to say.

The hightlight is the little bass solo near the end.

yes that live version is great. love the horns. and yes its not like a "masterpiece" but Prince's 'Head" is not a masterpiece, just very enjoyable. but i do find that live version head bopping blissful
