Just to put the entitled feeling generation in their place, David Bowie won four grammys and they were all after he was DEAD. So spare me his chart success blah blah i get it, but years ago there were artists that were killing it on the charts and that was when MUSIC was bought not rented like now, and they never got close to a grammy nomination. So he can sulk because he was mr superbowl halftime that no one cared about, I have no time for his boycott. ALSO this year finally though its also about publicity the Grammys is honoring small music venues for what they are losing and have lost and also the artists that LIVE music brought us, with out the small venues no get no Dylans and Prince and all that stuff and now this is mostly lost on the crowd nominated for grammies today or at the show because when was Beyonce struggling in a club playing gigs, or any of the nominated artists for the most part, so the Weekend i could care less who wins, who cares its not relevant at all more so now more than ever. CynicKill said: In other words it's grammy fodder. But since they didn't want him to perform at the superbowl his shut-out looks suspicious.
I'm NOT a Weeknd fan. Never have been; I think he's a dull, pale, watered down imitation of his influences that he's been compared to and his music doesn't stand out much from the pack aside from his shrill, unappealing voice. He's a mediocre performer at best who uses special effects and stage tricks in a thinly veiled attempt to mask his ineptitude on a live stage. Though I like "Blinding Lights" well enough, I believe the acclaim for his album is just another example in a years long string of unwarranted praise in the overwrought circlejerk of this modern manufactured mainstream music scene. ...however, based on the NARAS' own arbitrary standards, he was screwed. Not a single nomination for him despite having a critically acclaimed and very commercially successful album while Taylor Swift gets her annual handout and a flavorlessly bad artist like Justin Bieber receives recognition with his worst song from his latest flavorless fast food album. Something smells and The Weeknd has every right to call the Grammys out on their BS once again. [Edited 3/13/21 14:06pm]

His sense of entitlement surpasses that of any other current artist, with the possible exception of Nicki Minaj. I understand that he's annoyed about being snubbed, but this sort of thing happens to dozens of artists every year, yet he's making the situation all about himself at the end of the day, because I highly doubt that he would've said anything bad about the Grammys had his album been nominated.
Also, he keeps implying that the Grammys don't matter to him, yet this is like the fourth time he's talked about them; he clearly does care deep down.

Everybody who claims The Weeknd is simply entitled and whining about how he's not getting the recognition he thinks he deserves cite the many others the Grammys failed to recognize or failed to recognize at the right time. We all know there are countless discrepancies in the NARAS' decisions and how it's resulted in many immortal musical legends not receiving their tangible due as well as other artists being over-rewarded for their contribitions that frankly, did not not deserve the honor especially in light of better choices. However, The Weeknd not getting a single nod (as spoiled and whiny as he may sound), is just the most recent discrepancy from the Grammys. Many deserving names have either not won or like Abel, not even been nominated at the show but what makes this instance different is the speculation behind WHY a popular name like The Weeknd was snubbed entirely. The guy checked off about every single box there was (critical acclaim [for some reason], commercial success, name value, etc.) so what possible reason could the committee have had to not recognize him beyond petulant pettiness? This is something worth discussing and I think a significant chapter in the Grammys' long strong history of getting it wrong.

I'll just go on to say that standards simply were higher then. Many haven't come to terms with that but it's true as I'm sure you already know. Nowadays, critics give out praise like candy on Halloween and awards shows hand out their prizes to artists the same way. It's all so manufactured, calculated and contrived. The bar was higher then but even so, there is still some precedent to be had these days and the Grammys blew it once again. Also, I wouldn't say Michael Jackson was a Grammy darling. He won 13 awards out of 38 nominations with most of them (7) coming of course from the success and impact of Thriller which was just far too big to be ignored. BUT ignore is pretty much what the Grammys did with Off The Wall which countless people also consider a pivotal album and celebrate as such to this day. Though you didn't mention him, Prince matches Michael for Grammy noms and has claimed only 6 less than MJ which one can argue is not that big a gap in the grand scheme, especially looking at how well P's legacy is doing. So if MJ is a "Grammy darling", Prince pretty much is as well even if he never won the AotY he deserved. Shoot, Lionel Richie has won only 4 Grammys out of 32 nominations, less in both categories than either Michael or Prince so I wouldn't consider him a "Grammy darling" either. Now Justin Bieber is getting in on the action, despite receiving 4 noms, he's mad that he's not performing and was upset that his pathetic excuse of an album wasn't put in for the R&B category last year. Considering the down and out state of R&B today, why not include a Justin Bieber album? Despite the topic of "White=Pop, Black=R&B" this can open the conversation to, this is a pretty dumb reason to not show up IMO. But hey, it's his dumb reason and as long as it's a way to stick it to the Grams I'm for it. [Edited 3/13/21 18:59pm]

Justin Beiber pulled similar crap the last time he was nominated and that time he was up for AOTY. He just wants attention. I remember when Frank Ocean didn't submit Blond over a campaign similar to Oscar So White. But truth be told he should've shown up, if only to redeem himself after that lackluster performance he gave at the last one he attended. One of the grammy producers said as much, but instead of proving him and us wrong, he did what he always does and got pissy. Also his album most likely would've been a shoo-in for an AOTY nod. But it was probably for the best. He's too in his own head. I doubt he'll ever give a great performance.

Well again its not to argue but what I am saying is join the line of those way more influential that got the shaft, the Weekend is looking at it and now Beiber in terms of "i sell so i should get this" , my problem with that is in a year that has had no LIVE music and probably wont on a bigger scale till next year though small shows will and are coming back, that you take this entitled stance now, a year where the grammys is actually looking at small music venues which are the lifeline of music from its roots, I mean you can forget this large giant places, but without those smaller venues you have nothing, so with that all i hear about is the Weekend complaining, this whole show should be a thank you to people buying your music, whether in a physical form or digitial or renting your music through streaming, I would have done away with a ceronomy to be honest, and honored what these small venues did, and look at the ones that are NOT opening again ever. But that is lost on todays mainstream because what clubs are they playing? Are they gigging it for years till they develop an audience? I mean Beiber got his break cause of Youtube right? Wow real struggles and others too whether famous for a singing show or this or that very few even nominated KNOWS what these veneus are about. And if the Weekend is talking about snubbing look at what the SHOW and nominating committe has done to Rock Music overall, years ago it was an award given on the show now its not even featured, every year they toss out the same Rock act like Metallica and slap in Lady GaGa or Rhianna kids will watch, or the Foo Fighters and throw in some pop artist, but its such a slap in the face, and then because the grammy nominating cant even look into the field for ROCK females it combines the whole thing to one award, so its now a "rock performance" category. But just a QUICK fact, a Billboard chart i have been watching the last two months is the most important one, and thats TOP ALBUM SALES, this to me is the one, because this means people buy your record, even if its digital they bought it, or they got the vinyl or they got cd whatever it has nothing to do with tabulating streaming numbers into sales, thats BS, because you can listen to thirty seconds of a song and it counts, listen to half an album on streaming and it counts and we all know there are so many ways to BS streaming numbers its happening all over. So in looking at this SALES chart now the last two months its been all rock artists debuting at number one and yet there positions on the TOP 200 are lesser so we dont pay attention, so alot of these artists would be quite shook up if the Grammy committe started just looking at REAL SALES.

I would just to all these cats. ELTON JOHN lost all of his 23 nominations for his music, he did not get an award till 1987 when he was part of "Thats what friends are of" so cant count that, he then gets one for a classical composition in 1992 that was not his, then he gets one for the Lion King which again, sorry thats not because of him, and then in 1997 he wins for the Tribute to Diana song. So this guy who ruled the 70's and alot of the 80's got zero for his music, he then was given the typical Lifetime Acheivemtent and then a Hall of Fame award. Same of David Bowie, he lost all 13 of his nominations but he also never got nominated till 1984 for Lets Dance and Cat People now even David said this was the lowest of his work, so the guy with all that critical acclaim and influence all through the later 60's and 70's got nothing he then lost all his nominations, got his first award for the Hall Of Fame for the Grammys in 2006 then did not win a nomination till his four wins after death. The list goes on with the likes of Zepplin, the Beatles, Chicago etc....so Bieber and the Weekend please boycott and stop submitting. Whatever they do, you, me and everybody else but the NARAS knows that the Grammys need to change because as what's supposed to be the most prestigious award for musical achievement, its track record is pretty embarrassing. It's something that's been discussed for years and whether coming from a sense of entitlement or not, The Weeknd getting snubbed is the latest egregious choice they have made since the committee is breaking their own rules even by today's standards. I should also point out that I'm not saying Weeknd should have won but to not even be nominated when there are lesser contenders on deck is not a good look. I only want to see Anderson Paak and Bruno's performance so I'll have to stay up for that. Also, I find it funny that while Bieber apparently wasn't allowed to perform, the Grammys were happy to allow Silk Sonic on even on such short notice. They got one thing right at least.

they made a small area for it this year though i am sure it will be like the Hall Of Fame award they give it that gets two minutes and fake applause from todays crowd. The fact is Live venues are lost on todays artists for the most part, since almost none play live or got here by playing live. My thing is the "who cares" part of it, what are you looking to change? I mean Elton John lost every grammy nomination he had during the 70s and 80's but when your competition is Billy Joel Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder its fine, he also lost Best New Artist to Taste of Honey we see how that went and he never really got an award for his music literally because I dont count the Tribute to Diana and the Tribute to Aids research and the Lion King as his artistic work, and that is what he got it for. THe guy was the charts for a whole decade literally and toured small and big venues so I cant get on board with anyone from todays issue, its typical social media nonsense, already its trending and the Weekend has chart movement because of it etc... so I am in a way tired of hearing "awards dont matter" when clearly they do or you would just move on as an artist, David Bowie didnt lose sleep on trinkets, I mean did you get into this for a statue?

I always go back to Steeley Dan and Herbie Hancock's AOTY wins. People were up in arms because shock-rapper Eminem didn't win the award. In a way I can see why because he was the zietgiest that year but then I look at it and think well it IS Steeley Dan, who NEVER won a grammy and though well past their prime, still showing a musicality absent from Eminem's work. I think Eminem was quoted saying he didn't even know who Steeley Dan was, a snideness so tone deaf it never should've escaped a fellow musician and nominees mouth. Herbie Hancock upset Amy Whinehouse, who sadly didn't stay around to reach her potential. But why be upset with a legend who never won AOTY and truly deserved to win? yes and what happened many times because Bob Dylan won album of the year the show got called the GRANNIES and honestly I find that offensive, now Im not a dylan fan but everyone I know loved that record similar to the Santana record that got notice because he used mainstream artists and sold millions but that was not a real santana record by any means. What younger artists dont get is that critical acclaim sometimes any many times WINS or gets nominations, the Grammys has however become nothing more than whats popular machine at times, but also totally in the dark, basically anything to do with Rock music they are lost which is no shock because THe American Music awards thinks the only people in Rock are Lenny and Dave Grohl and every show invites them to show "hey we are down with rock" well if you were down youd see that the last month and a half has seen FOUR rock albums dominate SALES, actual sales not streams, meaning people put down money on your vinyl cd or even a full digital copy and didnt rent your album or play thirty seconds of a song for a hit.

That's always what it was since the beginning in the late 1950s. Look at what was nominated and who won the 1st few years of its existence. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Why would she know Van Halen? That's not her generation of music. You're just assuming people are supposed to know something because you do. My Mom doesn't know who Steely Dan is and she was around when they were originally together. That isn't the kind of music she listens to. Many people just listen to one genre. People also tend to listen and/or buy music of their own race/ethnicity over another one. Mexicans buy Mexican artist albums, Indians watch Bollywood movies, Koreans listen to K-Pop, ect. This could be bias on my part but I'll own that. However, timing is also a thing as well. It's great to see your favorite/significant artists receive plaudits for their work but when they receive it for something else decades after their peak years then it's a bittersweet thing, especially when it takes away from whatever younger, current artist might have something worth acknowledging up for contention. december implied that back in the day, competition was much stiffer which I agree with. Looking back, for decades, many artists and groups who we consider legendary now were dropping music yearly and rubbing shoulders with one another on the charts. Even if whatever album they've released isn't their best, seeing their name in between those of fellow music icons is a sight to behold. Now, thanks to the internet, we have more "stars" than ever but far less star power sharing the spotlight; the competition is wayyyy lighter now. How many times have we witnessed a truly stellar and deserving list of AotY nominees? The most recent one I can think of is 1985's where you had Purple Rain, Born In The U.S.A., Private Dancer, Can't Slow Down and She's So Unusual battling for the crown. All blockbuster releases from artists who dominated the previous year with what would end up being THE biggest albums of each nominee's career. The wrong album took the prize but at least Lionel was a current, relevant force. Imagine if instead of him, Prince Tina, Cyndi and Bruce up for the prizes, it was Prince, Tina, Bruce and instead of Lionel and Cyndi, you got John Denver and Frank Sinatra and from that selection, Denver won the award? Sure, a legend gets his flowers but it's usually at the expense of more deserving acts at present and for an album or song that isn't one of their seminal works. It's a double edged sword and just a matter of how you prefer to slice it. The only way to give the NARAS the benefit of the doubt is by stating the obvious that not everyone can win a Grammy, much less one in the main categories but that would mean making the best possible choice of what's available. And more often than not, giving the award to a veteran act over the young, new game changer is not the best possible choice. [Edited 3/29/21 8:50am]

I don't know I mean you're nominated with four other acts. "Hmmm who is this Steeley Dan person I'm nominated with?" "Let me search Yahoo! and see." "Hey Nineteen?" Let me stream-download-whatever was popular in 2001 and see what's up." "Oh THAT's them? I've heard that song before." Eminem isn't obligated to do this at all but he's the musician that was nominated in the same catagory he was supposed to win. It wouldn't have even been an issue had he gave off the attitude of hey, I never heard of this group, why are they winning over me? It just seems so hubristic to me.

Which is why i said I am surprised she didnt know, I am not surprised mainly because Rock is not mainstream she wouldnt have heard it that is the point Eminem would never hear Steely Dan, because its rare the listener ventures out of their zone, which is why then you had Hall and Oates and Sly and Earth Wind and Paul Simon on the same bill and show, now everyone of these shows is in a box theres nothing diverse now, its BS when people say these times are more diverse, really?
