Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister) You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Not all my faves, but probably the best singers of all time.
1. Aretha Franklin - Only a moderate fan, but she must be singled out for her raw vocal ability. . 2. Donna Summer - Her voice, I mean just gives me collywobbles. A strong voice, deep full of gravitas and so much more than a disco artist. Her voice has the power to lift and has that strong gospel tradition like Aretha's. . 3. Barbra Streisand - Before you all laugh, I dare you to listen to Woman in Love and Don't rain on my parade - her voice is so strong and powerful and has so much gravitas to it. She could be number one on any given day. . 4. Nina Simone - Again not the biggest fan, but her singing ability is just ..wow! . 5. Celine Dion - Her range and some of her songs, All coming back to me, The Power of Love. Yes she's a bit cheesy and some of her song choices - but again for sheer vocal power. . 6. Mariah Carey - Solely for her pre 1998 output, she can really sing and her range is amazing, I really love all the early albums and stuff up to Butterfly, later she gets too hip hoppy and less vocal stuff. . 7. Cyndi Lauper - Very underrated, True Colours, I drove all night - these are masterpieces. The last song was a case of a Madonna soundalike sounding better than Madonna. . 8. Shirley Bassey - Very underrated and barely known outside the UK and Australia/NZ, she has an amazing voice with bravura vocals and has been singing since 1956 (She is 84 now). Songs like What now my love, I who have nothing, As I love you, Goldfinger, Moonraker, Domage Domage and her version of Something - wow! . 9. Madonna - Great songwriter and presence, but her vocal ability has never been above average and the Minnie Mouse on helium phase can not be forgiven. Great songs - poor voice, plus her post Music output has been awful mostly. . 10. Cher - That throaty voice and some good songs, but not on the league of the others. . Highly Commended . Chaka Khan Martha Reeves Elkie Brooks (Pearl's a singer) Renee Geyer (Australian) Dionne Warwick Macy Gray (Her 1st 2 albums only) Amy Winehouse (Not a fan, but even I can admit she had a one of a kind voice) Billie Holiday Ella Fitzgerald Sarah Vaughan

As a Steelers fan I used to hate that Flinstones sounding anthem. The Miami Dolphins made one the same season or next. I will compile my list later but Gladys is numero uno. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Yes. Vesta could really belt out those big ballads. Unfortunately, her signing with A&M was bad timing. Her debut album was released the same year as Janet Jackson's "Control" and we all know which one the label decided to put their promotional dollars behind. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.!
