So what has Mint Condition, Reheem Devaghn, Van Hunt and others been doing?

No one's discounting them. It's not a contest, really. There is room for everyone. Someone, many, have to pick up the mantle. So now that there are a group of folks doing that, including the ones you listed, let's just enjoy it instead of tearing it down. Beats 85% of the shit on the radio right now.

I just saw a new Maroon 5 video with Megan Thee Stallion. I appreciate MTS, but the song was balls. It was more like an Adam Levine solo song (which most M5 songs tend to be in the last decade anyway, and they're progressively worse each time). I'd put Silk Sonic on repeat for days before I ever listened to that M5 shit again.

I agree with that. I actually enjoyed the Silk Sonic performance. M5 and MTS are pure shit IMO.

I don't like the song, but I'm not mad at folks that do.

I just don't get the attraction 2 Mars and his music.

I wonder why when contemporary R&B is brought up on this site, people bring up Mint Condition, a group that is at least 30 years old. They never really crossed over anyway. Bruno is more like Lionel Richie, Billy Ocean, Bobby Brown, & Michael Jackson who had Top 40 pop success. Bruno Mars & Beyoncé are popular with the mainstream. So I don't understand why he is being compared to obscure singers like Van Hunt. Not even the same audience. Bruno also has the teen idol appeal that has existed in mainstream pop music since at least the 1950s. That's the reason for magazines like Tiger Beat. Girls hang the pictures on the wall. Currently BTS is the big thing.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I want 2 make sure my point is clear.

2 say that they are "bringing" it back is incorrect.

that pretty much sums it up right there...that is the essence of white privilege...a disgusting dichotomy

You are aware Bruno is a man of color right? fuse

im fully aware that Bruno Mars is not a so-called black man...there are plenty of "people of color" that hate and despise people of African descent...so Bruno Mars can be any color he wants...he's not black or African...and he never will be, no matter how hard he tries to sing or dance

He never tried to be anything but Bruno. Stay mad.

I personally consider Bruno to be the textbook definition of a culture vulture given that he's so blatantly inspired by Black artists to the point where he basically just rips them off and was actually sporting an afro/Jheri curl hairdo at one point despite not being off African descent just to keep up the pretense.

That said, my dislike of his music has less to do with that and more to do with me simply finding everything that he does creatively bankrupt. He's the most simple, cookie-cutter funk/pop/soul/R&B chimera that I've ever seen.

That is really obtuse and ignorant. But, if you look at him through the years since he was a kid, I guess he's just been keeping up the pretense for this moment right now. rolleyes

Dude was raised around music and rubbed elbows with a lot of famous people. To call him a culture vulture is just a stupid opinion based in a lack of facts, especially when attacking someone's hair accusing them of ethnic appropriation.

Going even further back with pics:

If you don't like his music, fine. Don't listen. Other people do. But I don't believe we can have a valid conversation here on the Org if one participant is ignoring what is right in front of them.

Sorry bro, Black folks aren't the only ones allowed to be funky. I don't think anyone's claiming he's Black anyway.

People are acting like he's not even what he is: he's Puerto Rican and Hawaiian (which has Asian roots as his mother is Filipino). His dad also has (Ashkenazi) Jewish ancestry. My God, the man hasn't permed his hair and painted his face. It's not a minstral show. He's about as ethnic has a person could be. This is what I'm talking about with folks trying to gaslight themselves into something out of what... what's the motivation? Y'all gotta just stop.

The song is good, he's talented. Ain't no one else sitting up there playing drums and keyboards. Everyone's singing to a goddamn backing track with doubled vocals and a lot of studio help. This man comes out with a full on band, choreo, and wrote his music, and he's a bad guy? Guess that makes Prince a phony, too. Cuz he did all that, too.

R&B and Soul aren't African artforms but American artforms, so any American has the right to do whatever they want with there artforms wether you like it or not. 'Black' isn't a culture and neither is 'White'.

Be glad that at least someone is trying to keep that American artform alive when most of the 'Black' "artists" these days are stuck in there autotune loops, shit-hop and hip-pop.

R&B and Soul ARE art forms of the descendants of Africa...and there is a stark difference in black and white culture...you obviously have no idea...typical of white people to try and strip blacks of their african/black culture, and label it as "American" to suit their own white supremacist agenda and include themselves into the process...thats gone on for decades even centuries here in this country...you sound very uneducated about the matter, and you sound very white.

You're the racist here trying to seperate your American culture into 2 different things.
I didn't say anything about some difference between 'Black' and 'White' culture so why bring that up??
African culture has nothing in common with you (and this comes from a real African) so no matter how much you pretend to be African, you're not. You're an American who happens to have a dark skincolor. I'm white and from Holland so that doesn't mean just because I;m White I must be Russian or have anything in common with there culture.
There's no harm in accepting being an American and honor all that Black Americans have done and given America (and the world).
You just want to be a victim by making up things that you don't know anything about, i bet you never visited Africa or know anythig about there rich culture or could even name 20 countires in Africa without looking it up on Google. You're ancestors were African and you are not. Just like alot of white people in the US there ancestors were Irish or Dutch doesn't mean they themselves are or have any claim to those cultures.

im not gonna go back and forth with an obvious white supremacist who is trying to tell me what i am or what im not... im a man of African descent living in America...just like the Italians, Germans and French who live in America and claim their European origins and dont signify as Americans...African descendants have already been stripped of our names, our languages, our lineage, and our inventions and our land...and here you are advocating that we dont have any culture or arts of our own...you are proving my point everytime you type...

You are continually trying to frame me (without any evidence) as a racist with your made up ideas, you are a sad little individual because obviously to anyone who can read my and your posts here can see that YOU are the one who's blinded by racism.
So stop being a racist, no one need you or that here.
And those descendant of Italians, Germans and French in teh US are full of shit to.
You just don't ewant to accept that you're (just like them) an American with your own rich culture.
You sound like one of those annoying British black people who cultivated some fake Jamaican accent just fake there authentcity.

yep...im a racist black supremacist...living in America, the home of white supremacy...its the hate that your European brethren created....so go ahead and get your last word in, because you havent said or typed anything of any truth or substance yet, and i normally dont spend this much time entertaining fools

My wife is Kenyan and I am quoting her.

hmmm..... confused

See some posts above where I quoted her more.
teh sentiment among a lot of Africans seems to be that Black Americans only acknowledge Africa when there something to be gained or only when success is prevalent -> Cultural Appropriation at it's finest.
