"Rich Girl" by Hall and Oates is 44 years old!

Today, in 1977, Hall and Oates released "Rich Girl." I can't believe it's been that long ago! It's crazy to think "She's Gone" was out four years before that. Even "Sara Smile" was out a couple of years before "Rich Girl." They truly have been around for a great, long career.

I didn't really clue into them until "Private Eyes," to my knowledge. Maybe "Kiss On My List." My aunt bought me the 7" single of one of them. I can see the label in my head, but can't remember which song.

So I'm interested to hear not your favorite decade of Hall and Oates, but just some of your favorite songs throughout their career.

Also, are there unknown or non-single gems that you think should be recognized?

For me, the extended intro section of "Out of Touch," its own track called "Dance On Your Knees" is an interesting jam. The extened mixes of both of those songs are great and noisy and fun.

I also thought "Method of Modern Love" was unique in spelling "M.E.T.H.O.D.O.F.L.O.V.E." I guess that was an adult education. (See what I did there?)
While it was a single, "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" wasn't nearly as big of a hit as the other singles from Big Bam Boom. But it's a gem.
"You Make My Dreams" has a funky piano riff, that reminds me of how funky a piano or keyboard can be a la "Shake Your Body Down" by The Jacksons.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

“Say It Isn’t So” is another favorite. It takes me right back to late ‘83.That was such a fun time! Junior high days smile Hall and Oates got ALOT of airplay on our local R&B station. In fact,”I Can’t Go For That” reached Number one on the R&B charts.Their style of soulful pop was definitely a winning formula.

These cats were something else. I've been bumping their stuff heavy lately, particularly their cuts and they were more than just singles artists.

That said, I got a real fondness for many of their lower charting hits: "Possession Obsession", "Your Imagination", "Some Things are Better Left Unsaid", "Back Together Again" all hot tracks.

And "Possession Obsession" is an Oates lead vocal, which often goes untouted.

A few months ago,I purchased a vinyl copy of their 1983 Rock N' Soul' Part 1' album. It's a 'best of' compilation that also contains two then-new songs ("Say It Isn't So" and "Adult Education").It was a very popular album back in the day and I couldn't resist buying a new,180-gram vinyl reissue. What I didn't know is that this album comes with a huge 1984 calendar featuring all of their previous album covers!! biggrin That was a nice surprise.

Top 5 :
1) I can't go for that ( 12')
2) You make My Dreams
3) She s Gone
4) One on One
5) Rich Girl

Such a shame their discography is now completely out of touch - I mean out of print.

You wouldn't think an act as big as Hall & Oates was would have their stuff out of print.

Also, when was the last time their albums were re-certified? I know they didn't sell insane motherlodes like some of the time but with their 80s output in the platinum range, you'd think that number would be a bit higher almost 40 years later.

That makes me wonder if they own their music. I would think a band like that would put their resources together, make a deal and get ownership of their work. Part of the Prince deal was that he owned his music, but WB had an exclusive license to distribute it (opposed to Rhino or anyone else randomly getting rights to put out a shitty compilation, etc). It was good because now the slave became the master, and had the right to say yay or nay to WB about something (not that he didn't anyway, but ownership gives more control, no doubt).

I digress. If H&O don't own their music, I'd like to ask them WHY. I'm sure they own publishing or something... or maybe they don't. Neither seem to be hurting. Oates lives a quiet comfortable life in Colorado while Hall does his internet stuff and all his other hobbies.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

They only had about 4 or 5 really popular albums. None of the rest did that much. Not many people are checking for War Babies, Marigold Sky, or Beauty On A Back Street. Their solo albums were not successful either. Daryl had 1 Top 10 hit single on the Hot 100 (Dreamtime) and a minor hit with another single Foolish Pride. The first song of theirs to become a hit was Tavares' remake of She's Gone. Then Hall & Oates' version was re-released and then it became a hit.

True. I was mainly talking about from Voices to Big Bam Boom, their commercial apex. Plus, with them being mainstays on MTV as well, you'd think their albums would have marked more than double platinum status.

I've watched Live From Daryl's House and a few times he's performed songs that he said the only time he sang them before the episode is when they were recorded

I could put a ‘best of’ CD on and I wouldn’t have to skip over any of the songs. All of their hit singles are high-quality.

They had six gold albums and 7 platinum (or multi-platinum) albums, plus 6 Number One hits.Billboard named them “the most successful duo of the rock era”.They had a really good 10-year run (1975-1985) where they frequently had hit singles climbing the charts.

I didn't read all the comments so not sure if it's been mentioned but Daryl Hall

hosts various musicians to jam @ his home now. It was fun to watch the CeeLo Green episode.

I never cared far Hall & Oates back in the day but he has a great studio and there are a number of musicians jamming during these sessions.

The show used to be from his home. He built a club and the shows are filmed there now from what I remember. That was a great show when he first did it years ago.

i don't yet know JC(aren't you new here, JC?), or the purpose of the z's, but it's kind of crazy to think that someone can't appreciate Hall and Oates contributions to music...it's kinda like someone thinking Donna Summers was garbage(which she was not)....actually, it would be worse. wink

As far as favorite DH and JO songs, there's plenty.

Sarah Smile, Method of Modern Love, Winged Bull, Private Eyes, Is It a Star, Rich Girl, Lady Rain, I Can't Go For That, She's Gone, August Day, Do What You Want, Kiss on my list, Family Man, Italian Girls, Maneater, Big Kids, Melody For A Memory etc. etc.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.
