Preference: Vanity 6 VS Mary Jane Girls

Artist as well as self-titled album, what gets your vote?

Mary Jane Girls and it's not even close. Better songs, better voices.

I'd say MJ Girls. I met them as a kid when they did a record signing in the late 80s.

Vanity 6 but the two Mary Jane Girl albums are as solid as anything else Rick James did at his peak. Only Four You I probably play more than any of his albums bar Street Songs.

I LOVE the Vanity 6 album but I have to go with the Mary Jane Girls. Jo Jo McDuffie. I mean, c'mon. She had one hell of a voice!

Mary Jane Girls...by ALOT...other than "Nasty Girl", V6 music was very forgettable...

Mary Jane Girls had r&b funk anthems:

All Night Long

Candy Man

In My House

Boys

To drop my coins in the box, I gotta give it to the MJ Girls.

V6 was the first out the gate but if the stories are to be believed, then Prince jocked Rick's idea. That doesn't inherently make the MJ Girls better than V6 but it's something to ponder.

Anyway, while V6 were a unique outfit in music at the time, I think Rick went further in distinguishing the girls from himself. It feels like he modified his sound on their debut to be a bit more nuanced and softer while retaining the edge and attitude of punk funk. There's a subtle but noticeable contrast between Rick's previous album and Mary Jane Girls; though he bridges the gap to Cold Blooded by incorporating synths doing some new wave stuff with the girls' LP.

In comparison, it seems P simply composed music that would have been right at home on his own album and put different faces to the music.

Looks: V6

Songs/talent: MJG

Those MJG albums are great (especially the 2nd) and I still play them a lot.

Mary Jane Girls

but I will say this: the Vanity 6 album was truly ahead of it’s time. The world had never seen anything like it before.....blatant,in-your-face sexuality from three women in lingerie! biggrin it was such an outrageous concept!! Their album explored funk, pop, electro funk, some New Wave and even rap (“If A Girl Answers...”).It’s a bold, shocking album.

Definitely! It's a landmark album for its uniqueness and can be viewed as a harbinger of what was to come within the not so distant future.

This is how you know Prince learned from Rick James. Forming a girl group and stealing his woman 🤣.

...and P and Rick learned the "girl group" formation from Ike Turner (Ikettes), George Clinton (Brides Of Funkenstien) and Sly Stone (Little Sister).

I absolutely love the V6 album and have really fond memories of that period in time. But, i gotta give it to the MJG's as being the more complete package...however, i still prefer the rawness and recklessness of V6 and the V6 album.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

in Rick James’ autobiography,he claims that the sexy girl group concept was his.”I made the mistake of telling Prince’s manager about my idea”,he said.”The next thing I knew, there was Vanity 6 parading around in lingerie”.

lol

the Vanity 6 album was released in August 1982.The Mary Jane Girls album was released in early 1983.Prince was simply faster, lol.

You know, my sentimental heart would pick Vanity 6, but realistically Mary Jane Girls have a better collective catalogue of songs.
If you will, so will I
