FIRST TIME REACTION!

Have you watched any First Time Reaction vids?
What do you think of them? They are usually introducing early period music to younger people.

I usually watch Jamel aka Jamal, Twinsthenewtrend, sometimes India Reacts, & a few others.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I watch Twinsthenewtrend reviews on YouTube.
Their reaction to Phil Collins In The Air Tonight
and Easy Lover with Phillip Bailey are classic.
Those drums of Phil Collins hypnotized them lol

There was one where this 20-something chick was reviewing "Vogue", you could make a decent drinking game out of how many times she hit the pause to say "Yeah... this reminds me of Lady Gaga."

Why would they heard of them? With the youngest audiences, it's likely that their parents did not listen to James Brown. Other than Living In America and maybe I'm Real, James hasn't really had mainstream promotion since the early or mid-1970s. I'm more surprised when people say they never heard songs like U Can't Touch This or Ice Ice Baby. Since those songs are still used in TV commercials & movies/TV shows. Plus they have hundreds of millions of views on Youtube. lol I know some people have discovered oldies because they were in the Guardians Of The Galaxy movies & Grand Theft Auto video games. Video games have been really popular for many years, since the early 1980s arcade days and Marvel movies are huge moneymakers.

When I was a teen, I knew about the previous generations of singers/entertainers.

When you were a teen, did you spend all of your time staring at a phone, laptop, or tablet? razz Music is more solitary now than decades ago. Back then more people had stereos or boomboxes where music was kind of shared. More people listened to the radio too and so they all heard the same songs/artists. Now most people listen to music with earbuds or Beats headphones. They choose what they want to hear rather than what a radio DJ plays. They don't have to wait for a particular song to be played. The average person today does not even own a stereo or buy CDs, records, or tapes. Stereo stores such as Radio Shack are rare to be found in many cities. They don't even put CD players as a default in new cars anymore. There was also less competition for entertainment than there is today.

As far as the previous generation of artists, Nelly's, P!nk's & Eminem's debut albums came out over 20 years ago. Destiny's Child first album came out in 1997. Rihanna's 1st came out in 2005. Usher in 1994. James Brown is like today's audience great-grandparents era music. Chris Brown is more the previous generation music, although he's still popular.

There's also the case that neither James Brown or Prince get anywhere near the same amount of media attention as The Beatles still do. And they have not existed since 1970, 51 years ago. The Beatles are a brand like Marilyn Monroe or Star Trek. The Fab 4 sell all kinds of stuff. Same for Elvis Presley.

But didn't Pink hit till about 2001 or so, though?

Are you saying that Rihanna (who's in the news here in India, due to the farmers protests), is Previous Generation?? Are we THAT old? -shocked-!!

Sure, especially since people have a shorter attention span now. Rihanna has a makeup line called Fenty Beauty. She also does some acting. So right now she's making money doing things other than music. Here's the current top 20 in Billboard for the Hot 100 singles & albums:

1 Olivia Rodrigo ~ Drivers License
2 24kGoldn feat. iann dior ~ Mood
3 The Weeknd ~ Blinding Lights
4 Ariana Grande ~ 34+35
5 Dua Lipa feat. DaBaby ~ Levitating
6 Chris Brown & Young Thug ~ Go Crazy
7 Ariana Grande ~ Positions
8 Justin Bieber feat. Chance The Rapper ~ Holy
9 SZA ~ Good Days
10 AJR ~ Bang!
11 Pop Smoke feat. Lil Baby & DaBaby ~ For The Night
12 Billie Eilish ~ Therefore I Am
13 Justin Bieber & benny blanco ~ Lonely
14 The Weeknd ~ Save Your Tears
15 Luke Combs ~ Better Together
16 CJ ~ Whoopty
17 Gabby Barrett feat. Charlie Puth ~ I Hope
18 Megan Thee Stallion ~ Body
19 Pop Smoke ~ What You Know Bout Love
20 Bad Bunny & Jhay Cortez ~ Dakiti

albums
1 Morgan Wallen ~ Dangerous: The Double Album
2 Pop Smoke ~ Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon
3 Taylor Swift ~ Evermore
4 The Weeknd ~ After Hours
5 Lil Durk ~ The Voice
6 Juice WRLD ~ Legends Never Die
7 Ariana Grande ~ Positions
8 Luke Combs ~ What You See Is What You Get
9 Lil Baby ~ My Turn
10 Anuel AA & Ozuna ~ Los Dioses
11 Taylor Swift ~ Folklore
12 Megan Thee Stallion ~ Good News
13 The Kid LAROI ~ F*ck Love
14 Bad Bunny ~ El Ultimo Tour del Mundo
15 Post Malone ~ Hollywood's Bleeding
16 Machine Gun Kelly ~ Tickets To My Downfall
17 Harry Styles ~ Fine Line
18 Eminem ~ Music To Be Murdered By
19 Original Broadway Cast ~ Hamilton: An American Musical
20 Juice WRLD ~ Goodbye & Good Riddance

That's about the Twins. People like Sting & Barack Obama have shouted them out too. Artists like Christopher Cross have put videos by other reactors like Jamel on their websites/Facebook. There's some who react to movie trailers/TV shows/movies who are known to actors & directors. Even Michael & Tito Jackson's sons have a movie reaction channel on Youtube. They're called Film Family.

I watch a few. I find it funny that quite a few reactors knew the Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive but never knew the song's or the group's name, then they see the video and are really surprised to discover that the Bee Gees are white lol
