What did you Donna Summer fans who lived through the disco years think of her 80s period? I thought it was interesting at best, her album's were too inconsistent, the only albums I consider her best stuff are She Works Hard For The Money, Wanderer and Another Time and Place. I'm Rainbow has a few good stuff but the rest is decent to awful, Donna Summer self title album was bad, Cat Without Claws and All Systems Go were terrible. She was still a big star from 80-84 anyways, winning Grammy's, TV specials, first black female artist on MTV, HBO Special, She Works Hard For The Money a perfect anthem for women but after 84 it went downhill from there. So what did you think? | |

The 1980s for Donna Summer was [IMHO] hit or miss. But most of the blame goes to record label exec David Geffen for not knowing how to promote Donna properly. | |

I did not think much of her at that time, her 1980 album the Wanderer mostly dates from 1979 and the late disco era. She works hard for the money was decent but you know it dates quickly.
Solitaire was horrible and Dinner with Gershwin was an artist badly trying to stay relevant. I think Geffen did the same damage to her career as he did with Diana Ross. The Stock Aitken Waterman album of 1989 was better, but suffers from that overly saccharine sound they had.
The worst part was her ignorant comment about Aids being sent by God to punish homosexuals for their sinful behaviour - yeah what a great way to isolate your audience! She tried to deny it and cover it up, but its there and we remember that stuff. I got plenty good loving for ya baby | |

But that rumour definitely nailed the coffin for good throughout her career. I agree with the Geffen comment and if you ask me I'd say it was the end of her career after She Work's Hard For The Money era. 84 - present was awful. Donna had that 1 last chance to redeem herself which was Another Place and Time which went well... Until she was suppose to do another album with them but as usual she was being difficult and they had a falling out and the rest is history. Don't get me started on Dinner With Gershwin 🤣🤣🤣🤣. That is definitely a definition of an artist trying to stay relevant. But around the mid 80s she was done if you ask me. | |
