Favourite Marvin Gaye albums

I bought Here My Dear in an Amsterdam record shop and the salesman said it was his best album. I said, no, that's What's Going On, to which he replied, then this is a close second! That was years ago and I've had plenty of time to listen to Marvin's albums and while I agree that Here My Dear is good, I think the follow up album In Our Lifetime is even better; here Marvin sings about the struggle between good and evil and the whole creation while having a funky good time backed by some great musicians. So here are my favourite Marvin Gaye albums. What are yours?

What's Going On
In Our Lifetime
Here My Dear
Trouble Man
Let's Get It On
Midnight Love
I Want You

What's Going On

Here, My Dear

Let's Get It On

I Want You

(Dream of a Lifetime - posthumous release, doesn't really count, but I'll include it here)

(Vulnerable - see above)

In Our Lifetime

Midnight Love

Trouble Man

I very seldom listen to the pre-What's Gong On stuff, so I can't make a proper listing on them. Maybe I should, I've listened to the others a bit too much.

I haven't listened to "Love Man" in a while either, not sure where I'd place it. Maybe after "I Want You".

Yeah, I know. Everything before What's Going On was when he was on the Motown assembly line like all the other Motown acts, so I can't really see them as Marvin Gaye albums. Still good music, though.

Here my dear is my favorite Marvin Gaye. It just runs sublime with emotion. Complicated and literally I can think of no album like it. Pick it up for a couple of bucks. What a bargin! Heavy. Like you are eavesdropping on Marvin's psyche. So personal.

listened to What’s Going On? for the first time last week and was totally blown away. i had heard about it from Rolling Stone naming it the greatest record of all time a few months back and decided to give it a listen. i think i got 3 tracks in before realizing that it wasn’t all a single track, since the segues are so great. need to check out more of Marvin’s albums since this is the only one i listened to

I second this. Remarkable. And the Deluxe version with alternate takes is amazing.

"What's Going On" is one of a few records that can bring me to tears while listening. Although my fave is "Here, My Dear". I once had a promo copy of the vinyl.

I am really into "In Our Lifetime" which I see as an epic battle between good vs evil, spirit vs flesh.

His 60's output is fascinating to listen to on a 'from whence he came to where he went' level. In fact, his whole life is just an incredibly complex journey.

Haven’t heard what’s going on in full, but I’m sure I would love it. I like several of the songs on it

I have the midnight love album and remember loving it when I first got it
