Why Did Sly Stone Speed Up His Vocals on Fresh?

Having just gone back to one of my all time favorites and listened multiple times to this all-time classic I have to wonder why his vocals are sped up. Yeah, he was steadily frying his brain with drugs, but has he ever commented why he did this?

"Anna Stesia come to me, talk to me, ravish me
Liberate my mind."

Because it sounded cool....Why did he slow down the speed on his voice in "Family Affair"?..Why did he leave the bed mattress springs making noise under him in "Just Like A Baby"?...same reason.

Regarding the bolded, I've been saying for months that I need better headphones! Never noticed the bed mattress springs...
