Worst edit job you've ever heard on a famous song

For me, it's "Start Me Up" by Rolling Stones. razz

Begins with solo guitar, then suddenly drums come in and the snare is echoing, but then the next count is a down beat and all the reverb from the drums have disappeared, and the rhythm is all weird. confused

Anyone editing that today would have dragged that straight from their digital workstation to Recycle Bin. lol

It happens all the time on many german radio stations.

The most jarring being butchering classic pop songs for the sake of more spot time.

I also remember reading that if a song runs under a certain time, there are no royalties to pay.

Please flame me for that! lol

Two come to mind:

1) The Ides of March "Vehicle:" 17 seconds of the original song was erased by accident, and they sorta had to piece it together leading into the guitar solo. Jim Peterik has always noted he hates how the guitar solo just sorta clumps into being. It's a really quick fade-in, and I mean quick, on an existing note.

2) The engineer who was working on "Paradise City" for Guns n' Roses set up a joke where they cut and pasted a section of the song so it repeated itself. They played it for Axel Rose, who was just there to listen to the production, etc., and then heard it. He actually liked it and told them to leave it in the song. It sounds ridiculous. It happens at the 4:34 mark.

Also, there is a weird edit in "Purple Rain" on a snare hit that bugs me to no end.

OMG just heard the ending spliced onto “Magic Carpet Ride". It sounds like someone was on a total trip and then slapped back to the present.

Agreed, Start me up is a weird song in this regard...but somehow, that sloppiness is part of its charm. Cleaned up it just wouldnt work as well, imo.

At the end of "It's A Kind Of Magic", Mercury sings "...fried chicken..."

Isn't that at the end of the song "One Vision"?

an

Debatable that its famous but there is a (great) song on Dylan's Blonde on Blonde called "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" where he literally splices together two completely different lines. It's the verse that starts Grandpa died last week.
"I knew he lost control,
When I sp-he built a fire on Main Street
And shot it full of holes"

I couldnt BELIEVE Mariah Carey's "Infinity" was allowed to pass through the editing with a very unstable transition from 2nd verse to refrain at 2:20.

Everything you own boy you still owe

[NO BREAK]

Close the door lose the key...

All the while, the drums are still going off beat and did not match how it was supposed to go originally. I cant belive no one even bothered to fix this minor error. If I had the stems I would do this happily for them. Matter fo fact I would like to ask these people what happened:

  • Assistant recording – Tristan Bott, Brandon Wood, Matts E. Larson
  • Mixing – Phil Tan
  • Additional/assistant engineering – Daniela Rivera

They let the ball drop.

Guy - "Teddy's Jam"

At the end of the song (probably no one will notice this anyway) the music abruptly cuts off and somebody says "damn!" when they thought the fade out was done. It was like somebody just pulled the plug on all the music suddenly.

But, didn't that happen on a couple of Prince songs, too?

The end of Phil Collins' "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven" drives me nuts... during the adlibs at the end, Phil starts to say "You're...", but he says it too early. The line is "You're all I need, please believe me". So he stops abruptly and restarts on time. It's just an obvious flaw an a top notch pop song.

I'm not saying its the worst, but its the one I immediately thought of.

Happens at 4:11....

Crown Heights Affair Sure Shot

The album version is super funky but the 45 version they cut the intro too short and

the funky guitar break in the middle of the song they hit one note then jump back to

the song. WTF?

When I listen to the album on Spotify they don't play the album version they play

the edited version mad

Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

This isn’t the worst, but I heard it this weekend. I thought Mariah’s I’ll be there was directly from mtv unplugged, but it may have been re-recorded or dubbed, because I caught a part where mariah is hitting a whistle note and the chorus began too early. How can it be if it was live?

I don’t know if you hear what I hear. It’s not smooth, it sounds like he was off time. It’s faint and quick, but my ear catches it each time.

The version of The Time's Jerk Out in the music video. Particularly the part at the ATM machine, where a guitar solo just pops up out of nowhere. lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
