George Clinton

-

And I don't know if this fits in this forum or the Prince Music forum, but:

the "Hey Man... Smell My Finger" album by George Clinton...

What a bomb of an album that (still) is.

-

Prince had just a small hand in that album.

But i've been listening to it the last couple of days, and i have the feeling there is more going on

concerning the Prince involvement.

Anyone here feels that too ?

Bad ass album. I had a playlist that really made it feel like a true 1993 Parliament album. They duetted on "The Big Pump" & you can hear P say "Let's Get Satisfied" in his deep voice on the track titled that. Eric + Atlanta was on that track as well. Definitely an underrated P-Funk album, but you could say the same thing for most of their discography after 1981 (the main Parliament & Funkadelic album timeline). "High In My Hello" & "And The Flag Was Still There" are tied for my two favorite tracks on the album.

Well I read the Princevault info too. wink

-

I even dare to say ther is more Prince to be heard on this brilliant album.

Put headphones on...

There is even some serious guitar playing here and there i believe...

Like in Rhythm and Rhyme...

And some more.

Haha...I'm actually an extended family member of the P-Funk collective...I wasn't around then, I was only 10 at the time. But still, yeah you're right though... I'm sure Prince had way more input on this LP as opposed to "The Cinderella Theory". "Dis Beat Disrupts" even samples "Housequake", so I'm sure he had something to do with that track for sure.

The crazy thing about it is that the videos from this were actually shown on MTV...just needed more radio push. "Paint The White House Black" really should've been a big hit with everybody that was on it. Dr. Dre & Ice Cube were on it among others, so you know how huge they were back then. '93 was obviously not the best time to release something on Paisley Park with the battle brewing...I got into P-Funk, Prince + EWF, all in that same year.

But that Arsenio Hall performance P-Funk did during the promotion was successful...so you know, the album should've went at least Gold. Probably actually did, just never got certified because of the battle & Paisley Park Records being "terminated" soon after.

One of my all-time favourite George Clinton albums. It's criminally underrated and still sounds fresh today.

I agree that Prince can be heard uncredited on some of the tracks. Vocally he's most obvious on 'Get Satisfied' using his baritone for the refrain and 'Dis Beat Disrupts' samples Prince's 'Housequake' and includes lyrics from the song, but I suspect that Prince is present musically also as there are some classic purple touches all over the album.

For me, it's one of the best albums Paisley Park (and later NPG Records, with a different cover) ever put out.

I dunno, his Paisley Park output leaves my ears a 'lil flat. I liked the way they did the tracks on the "demo" version of the album that was leaked as early as a couple years before the actual album came out.

I feel like thy went from that and over-propduced it to the point where the power of some of the tracks got completely lost.

First, I did not know that. Need to find these! Thank you! smile

-

Second, i don't agree that the album is overproduced.

This Goerge album just is tha bomb ! I looooooove these kind of productions.

Put your headphones on, and try to understand what i mean.

There still is so much to discover in this wonderful production that makes this album so goddamn funky and absolutely not outdated.

A serious underrated and forgotten classic in my hymble opinion.

P-funk top !

Indeed, the PP dispute, and the fact it was released under Prince's wings did not good tbh.

Is that demo version circulating? 'Hey Man...' was actually my first George Clinton album in 93. I was 15 and blown away. When he followed up with 'Dope Dogs' a few years later I was hooked and went down the P-Funk rabbit hole..

On this album all the 'rappin'' it's very accesable, and blends in perfectly with the p-funk.

I'm not much for 'rap' either, but here it just rocks the fuck out of it.

Such a great mixture and blending with super featurings. So expect toop notch rap.

Those known old school big stars just don't rap shit.

And they were praising George Clinton with the utmost respect.

It's them got Clinton out of the dump.

Basically sampling him and Parliament heavy at the time.

This is the sort of respect they pay back by collaborating.

Super hot album. Love all of it.

try this; play this album back to back with NPG's 'Exodus'!

You'll be trippin' without any dope.

At least I do. smile

It's dope!

Hey, I stuck with it, gave it a few more listens and it's a grower. I hadn't listened to any p-funk in some time and I think I needed to readjust my brain!

I definitely hear a big Prince influence on some songs. Lets Get Satisfied and High In My Hello sound like Prince songs uncredited to my ears.

I have the Greatest Hits and How Late Do U Have 2BBFUR Absent, what other George Clintons solo albums would you recommend?

Yeah it's out there. Not nearly as rare as it was at that time.

George just posted that he took the Covid vaccine. I doubt if he'll tour again. Glad I got to see him while I had the chance.
