The new thing: Black people watching heavy metal videos. This new thing shows just how open minded black people are on music. Fun to see people discover how just how good loud music is. You realize how funky some metal is. Favorites:

Who said black people weren’t open minded about music to begin with? Sounds like a bias coming from you if you ask me

I get why but it's a morbid paradox how those of us who enjoy genres of music that are primarily encompassed by white people are given the side eye in some quarters even though those genres were created by us.

It's because there is a lack of education amoung white and black people regarding where the things are coming from. I'm a white boy and i'm the first to say that rock and heavy metal was invented by black people. I think the reason is because early rock was a dance music genre. It was music for dancing.in the late 60's rock become less dance oriented and more about expression within the genre. On the other side while Motown at that time did start taking elements of psychodelic acid rock it was still retaining the dance element. So black people wanted to dance to the music and in the mid 70s disco appeared.White people decided that they also wanted to dance so in order for rock to survive it needed a new perspective,a new outlook.Thats why punk appeared and killed rock dinosaurs and long extended solos and as a result rock went to a shorter dance format once again. As soon as punk become mainstream a new thing was coming-first affordable synths that everybody can buy so everybody did and new wave was born. New wave combined cold Europen electronic sound with funk, rock, post disco, rnb. For me that was the most interesting period of "black" music when rnb was open to everything when it combined all the elements of popular music.Rnb stations played music that had guitar solos, rock elements and it was still rnb but much more than that. I think New Jack Swing brought a musical segregation from which black music never recovered in a sense that it become a very rigid and conservative form.Remember that in the 90s if rnb song had distorted rock guitar solo it was not played on rnb radio stations. With killing the adventure in music form you also set some "rules" how the music should sound. That is the reason also why it's weird to some when black people dig what is theirs in orgin.

I didn't know polka originated from black people. I do consider zydeco "Black polka" & Tejano "Mexican polka". You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Shit, I was given the 'side-eye' by some relatives (and friends) when I was listening to the Beatles & the Stones back in the 60s. It's why I kept my 'unique' tastes to myself for a long time because I was tired of being goofed on for listening to 'white-boy music'. But when I hit college, I didn't give a fuck anymore.
Thank goodness for grunge/alt rock. It's what I listened more to when R&B started going downhill.

Really, they had no choice but to be open-minded and adapt. It was either synth up your sound or call it a career. I think we got more success stories out of the deal, not to mention tons and tons of awesome music but it was time of ultimatum for many black artists and groups. With the cross-pollination power of Thriller though (a taboo at the time), thankfully things were able to change for the better.
