before Prince and MJ, Teddy Pendergrass was the ultimate live performing male solo act

Jackie Wilson, Sammy Davis Jr., Sam Cooke, Johnny Mathis, Paul Robeson, Jerry Butler, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, James Brown, Korla Pandit, Otis Redding, & Marvin Gaye were around before all 3 of them. Screamin' Jay Hawkins was doing in the 1950s what Alice Cooper became famous for in the 1970s.

i was talking about Mr Pendergrass in terms of immediately and chronologically before Prince, in the mid to late 70s... i wasnt going back to slavery, bro... but thanks for the history... im fully aware of all them cats

Even going by the same time period, there was Al Green, Bobby Womack, George Benson, Isaac "Black Moses" Hayes, Tyrone Davis, Donny Hathaway, & Barry White.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

So many omissions and PRINCE at 53? Its like the person compiling this forgot about him and then said "Oh Prince", but even with some of the latter day people how do you miss Chris Cornell who easily is the best male rock vocalist of the 90's and 00's all the way till his death this guy could sing the shit out of any genre. So lists are always nonsense.

Barry White made beautiful and great music, but he was not as great a SINGER as Teddy Pendergrass...most of the credit for Barry White's music goes to his songwriting, and the amazing Love Unlimited Orchestra, and rightfully so

to prove that point, his wife and her sister led Love Unlimited on songs that didnt miss a step without Barry's voice... a live Teddy Pendergrass show would blow away a Barry White show, on any stage any where... Barry White was a great songwriter/musician...Teddy Pendergrass was a great singer/performer
