Who's death in the music world affected you the most as a fan?

Marvin Gaye for me. Such a fucked up time period.

Prince first and foremost. I've been a fan for close to 40 years, so I was kind of devastated when we lost him. I truly believed I would be seeing him perform when were both in our 70's and 80's. For a long time after his death I couldn't listen to his music or watch any DVDs. Even today, I find myself getting emotional and melancholy when I listen to his music or watch his concerts on DVD. He will always be my "sweet Prince". sad heart

I will also say losing John Lennon and Amy Winehouse affected me deeply.

I was actually living in New York at the time with my mum, dad and sisters and when I found out about Lennon's death. I was scared to go outside.

Mjs death did that for me. It was so fucked up how he died and it messed with my emotions. I felt heartbroken that I almost saw him in concert and it was never going to happen now

I think Whitney Houston's death affected me the most, and Michael Jackson's death was a total shock. Although Prince is my favorite of all in the music world, I didn't take his death as bad as I thought I would if anything ever happened to him. I mean, I was sad and what not, but I surprised myself that I wasn't as devastated as I thought I'd be. I think that after the plane incident, I kind of expected something big like that to happen to him, so I wasn't totally shocked when it did.

So true, I couldn’t be anywhere without hearing his name for a long time, and it made me sad and mad cause I felt some of those people were not supportive of him when he needed it most

Rick James was probably the first one I even thought about. It made me a little sad at the time but not enough to cry or anything because he's not someone I've ever met so it's not like losing a family member or anything like that. I lost my mother three years later, now that was a blow that I felt and I felt it hard so any deaths after that are going to pale in comparison. I did break down at the cemetary a few years later when I went to visit her grave on her birthday. On the radio in the car when I was driving there, it was during the noon hour when they would play the "Lunchtime Oldies" and the last song that was playing before I turned the motor off was Prince's "Uptown". When I finished visiting her grave and got back in the car, by then, the "Lunchtime Oldies" show was over so they were playing their regular music. As soon as I cranked the car up, they were playing Prince's latest current song at the time. I can't even remember which one it was but it was a horrible song. One of the slow songs from "MPLSound". Regardless of how horrible I thought the song was, I remembered that the previous one I heard when I arrived was "Uptown" and that got me to thinking. All my relatives (the ones that I truly cared about) are gone now except for my three siblings. Many of my friends through the years have either died or moved away. And here is Prince that has been here the entire time and is still here. He sure as hell ain't what he used to be but he is still here. And while I was thinking it, I was still looking through the rear view mirror at my mother's grave. That got to me. It felt good to know that at least somebody was still there but still wanted her back. I thought about that cemetary incident on the day that he died. For a split second, I thought, OK, now everybody is gone. But I'm not crazy, I can put things into perspective. He's not somebody I've ever met so the only presence I've ever known him has been through his music so it's not really a personal loss like his family members would feel. After I got over being shocked, to be honest, the first thing I said was..... "Oh well....now we'll be able to get the good stuff. The old stuff from the 1980s from the vault. If he were still alive, we would still be getting that horrible new stuff he was working on.". lol

So sorry for the loss of your mother vainandy, that couldn’t have been easy. I was very sad about princes death but it inspired me creatively as I remembered how much I admired him and have some beautiful memories of sharing my work with others instead of keeping it to myself, so grateful for that though it didn’t feel like family either. With mj it felt more like losing a family member cause I used to be so attached to him and don’t have a relationship with my own dad, so mj was like a father figure to me and his death reminded me of how messed up other areas of my life were at the time and being stuck with that though things have finally balanced out and I have healthier boundaries with celebs in general and better friends and family relations

I will never forget how the radio station announced his death. The DJ came on and said “Let’s stop everything, Michael Jackson has died.” I was on my way home from work and actually saw people pulling over to the side of road and crying. The worldwide reaction was unprecedented.

I remember getting texts from different people and others reaching out to me to say sorry cause they knew I was a fan. It felt so bizarre considering it wasn’t family or someone I knew day to day

Its hard to narrow to one, because they have come at different stages in my life. Like I was very little when Lennon was shot but I saw how it effected my two older brothers and the music was all around me. And though this was long before social media and even media in general, this I can recall being all over, I remember where I was because my older brother was a big football fan and was watching the monday night game, I wasnt interested in the game, I was trying to go to sleep because I had school the next day and so did he but the tv was still on and i Couldnt sleep and this was the first time "death" really was around, I mean it wasnt a family member but it effected them because they both were born and young kids when the beatles hit here so they appreciated them in different ways then someone getting the music after they broke up. This would happen again not too long after when Harry Chapin died in a car accident, again it was through my oldest brother then I heard his music and was sad he was gone. Marvin Gaye was another, also Andy Gibb was one that kind of took a lot by surprise because of his age and again i remembered Andy more for Soild Gold because I was still young when he was huge. I think later for me was 1997 when Michael Hutchence died, it was a total shock still effects me now, mainly because they were one of my favorite bands but also one of the first 45's i ever bought with my own money was "Original Sin" and this was the visual era and that really got me into many peoples music also the radio and my oldest brother was always buying music so it was always around, but now i was starting my own collections and tastes, so when Michael died it took me back to being that kid not a teenager with his first record he saved his allowance for. So its a gradual change as I grow how it hits me, Bowie was one, Glen Frey, Prince just hit me beyond belief having been to so many shows and him being IT for me , but also Chris Cornell was another that saddened me, because here was someone who beat it, but didnt despite having kids a wife and those things really couldnt outweigh his pain.

george Michael for sure because it was a rough year in 2016 for death in music and then him dieing Christmas Day was like wtf no way . And Eddie Van Halen too was out of nowhere though it was speculated for awhile he was not doing well, no one expected it so quick

Prince! I'm still crying about him.

Losing MJ was terrible to me, but not as terrible as Prince.

Lennon, what a sad, sad time in the World.

George Michael, 2nd to Prince. It hurt too much.

3 of the 4 Gibb Brothers. Andy was way to young, and then to lose Robin and Maurice, was another kick in the gut.

Like Lastdecember, Glenn Frey, & Bowie.

Kurt Cobain.

George Harrison's death also brought great sadness to me, as did Eddie Van Halen's.

Prince ( (r.i.p.) still COMPLETELY devastated & will NEVER get over it ) ,

Teena Marie(whom I chatted with just barely two weeks before & told her I loved her back),

Rick James(whom I attended his viewing).

MJ(whom put me on a mission to make people here appreciate Prince(r.i.p.) more although it didn't work).

Aaliyah(whom I predicted something was getting ready to happen to her)

@alphastreet, people did the same thing to me when Prince died, because they knew how much I loved him, and it felt bizarre to me as well, because they were treating me like I knew him personally, whlch made me realize that I probably used to talk to them about him a lot biggrin...And even though I didn't take his death as bad as I thought I would (which surprised even me)..meaning I didn't cry hysterically or anything, but I could not listen to his music for a long time. Even now, I tear up when I hear Purple Rain or another slow song of his that makes me sad, and every now and then when I see him, whether in a video or in a pic, I tear up as well. I still miss him so much.

I was similar with mj too, I couldn’t enjoy his music for awhile and yet it was everywhere. I guess it’s a natural response to not cry too when in shock. With me when mj went, I was mostly mad but then would get sad when I least expected and burst into tears

Besides Prince's being the obvious (Bowie to a lesser extent), Scott Weiland's was a really hard one for me. Phife Dog's as well.

First it was MJ. The main playlist I use on Youtube to this day is still called "MJ". Because I used to use it during my MJ binge after he died.

Then Linkin Park died:

MJ didn't make it, Whitney didn't make it........why should it be any different for my third and final music hero? sad

Yeah. It's annoying, isn't it? I keep/kept thinking that when at fan forums people are relentlessly raging on Janet (or also here on the Prince live section), criticizing whatever she does, instead of just being glad that she's still doing it. It can be over sooner than you think.

I've had to defend Janet(whom i worked with) on here COUNTLESS times. Then was sent a warning by SURPRISE a moderator. rolleyes

If something happened to Janet. U might as well just go on & put me away with her. She would be the last of my favorites besides D'angelo,Jesse Johnson, Morris Day,Chaka Khan & Stevie Wonder.
